He was commissioned lieutenant colonel at the age of 25. Within weeks of the end of that war, he piloted a P-61 Black Widow to a world speed record. Horizon Oil and Gas Co. and Crest Exploration were some of his first venture before becoming an independent oil and gas operator under the name of Earl T. Smith and Associates in 1956. In the 1970s, he developed the Sleepy Hollow subdivision of Amarillo. But, apart from his business accomplishments, he will probably be best remembered by his love of the game of golf, and was one of the original members of the Vintage Club in Indian Wells, Calif., and Castle Pines outside Denver.
