Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in United Methodist Church with the Rev. Thacker Hayes officiating, and Jim Reyna, minister, assisting. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery by Bailey-Ware Funeral Home. Faris Jake Hess was born March 18, 1921, in Collingsworth County to Bessie and J.L. Hess, and was raised on the Sitter-Hess ranch. He attended school in a one-room elementary school called Enterprise, 20 miles south of McLean. He graduated from McLean High School in 1938. Jake received a degree in animal husbandry from Texas A&M University in 1942. While at A&M, he was a Corps leader, and continued his love of A&M for the remainder of his life. After graduation from A&M, he entered the U.S. Army as a 2nd lieutenant, serving with the 121st Squadron of the 106th Cavalry in World War II. He landed in Normandy, fighting across France, Germany and Austria. He was promoted to captain as commander of A Troop, later serving on the Group Headquarters Staff of the 106th. He received a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. Upon returning to McLean after the war, Jake entered the registered Hereford cattle business in November 1945. He was owner of the Doctor Hereford Ranch and active in several Hereford associations. He served as president of the Top 'O Texas Association, Panhandle Hereford Breeders Association and the American Hereford Breeders Association. Jake retired from the Hereford show ring circuit in 1977 after 25 years of showing registered Hereford cattle. He was an active member in McLean Methodist Church, Amarillo fair board and several civic organizations in McLean. He was known affectionately as "Pops" to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Margaret Coleman. Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Leta Mae Phillips Hess; a daughter, Nancy Blackburn; a son, Jake Hess; two sisters, Ruth Magee and Mary Dwyer; five grandchildren, Stephen Hudson, Tres Hess, Hillary Stull, Tanner Hess and Heather Braden; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Kennedy was born May 30, 1987, in Muskogee, Okla., and had been a resident of Pampa for the past five years, moving from New Deal. Stuart Wells was born Oct. 17, 1985, in his grandparents' home in Tyler. Years later he was born again as a child of God through Holy Baptism at a Baptist church in Overton. He graduated from Boys Ranch High School in 2004 and attended Tyler Junior College. Stuart had a special love for animals, leading him to enjoy his work at Rannals Veterinarian Clinic in Whitehouse. After being diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma in January 2003, his goal was to work in the field of medicine. Rare is the person who can be such an inspiration of Christian faith and kindness, while enduring great personal suffering. Stuart lived his life trying to do the impossible, which contributed to his gallant fight with cancer. Survivors include two brothers, James Whitehurst of Longview and Scott Whitehurst of Tyler; his grandparents, Bo and Lynda Shira of Whitehouse; his great-grandparents, Melvin and Jessie Gromatzky of Chandler; many aunts, uncles, cousins and extended families, including the Hebers, Jennings, Jones, King and Spencer families; and two special friends, Jeremy Spencer and Orry Jones. Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home of Wheeler. Mr. Brewer was born Feb. 24, 1929, in Canadian to Elmer and Alice Markham Brewer. He married Yvonne Bone in 1975 in Amarillo. He lived in Amarillo most of his life. He worked for Bell Helicopter as a machinist, retiring in 1989. He was a Baptist and a member of the Masonic Lodge. Survivors include his wife, Yvonne Brewer of Amarillo; two sons, William K. Brewer of Las Vegas and Johnny L. Robert was born June 9, 1930, in Oklahoma City, and was raised in South Lockett. He served his country proudly in the U.S. Army, and received an honorable discharge. Robert married the love of his life, Carolyon Mitchell, on June 8, 1952, in Vernon. Together they lived in Montana, in Borger for 13 years and in Amarillo for the past 39 years. He worked for Construction Services in Amarillo for 40 years as a general superintendent. Robert devoted a large portion of his life to the Boy Scouts of America as a Cub and Scout Master. He also trained at the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. He was involved with several organizations, including the vocational education committee for AISD and Kids, Inc., and was a lifetime PTA member. He was also a member of Wesley Methodist Church in Borger and St. Stephen United Methodist Church in Amarillo. Robert had a passion for woodworking and was also an avid reader. He was an honest and devoted family man, and touched the hearts of many people. He will be greatly missed. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Brenda Burgdorf; three sons, Jim Woodard and wife Sheryl, Mitch Woodard and wife Tyra and Ronny Woodard and wife Stephanie, all of Amarillo; three brothers, Lester Woodard and Richard Woodard, both of Fort Worth, and David Woodard of Southern Mississippi; six grandchildren, Shawn, Shane, Courtney, Megan, Nathan and Jordan; and a great- granddaughter, Brazlyn. She worked as a cafeteria manager for the Amarillo Independent School District. Mrs. Zint enjoyed camping and fishing in the mountains with her husband. She also enjoyed crocheting. Mrs. Zint was a member of Washington Avenue Christian Church. She married Edwin Henry Zint on Feb. 11, 1948. He preceded her in death on June 21, 2001. Thorne, 80, died Saturday, Nov. 11, 2006. Mr. Thorne was born to William Quincey and Ruby Minerva Thorne in Spearman. He married Katy Bussard in 1945 in the Locust Grove community in Lipscomb County. They graduated from Canadian High School in 1944. He served in the U.S. Army. Mr. Thorne received a B.S. and a master's degree from West Texas State University and an Ed.S. degree from Peabody College of Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn. He was an elementary principal at Springlake Earth schools, a high school principal in San Jon, N.M., and the superintendent of Grady, N.M., schools. He opened Paramount Terrace School in Amarillo in 1956 and was principal there for 20 years. He then taught at Tascosa High School and West Texas State University and taught senior English at Boys Ranch High School. He also served as principal at Lamar School in AISD. He taught Sunday school classes at First Baptist Church for many years. He was busy in the Boy Scouts, Kids, Inc., and "Y" ball. He worked in the HOSTS (Helping One Student to Succeed) Program in Palo Duro High School and Horace Mann Middle School. He touched many lives in New Mexico and the Panhandle of Texas. He and his wife toured all the continents in the world except Antarctica before he became ill. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and two brothers. Survivors include his wife, Katy Thorne; two sons, Stanley Charles Thorne of Amarillo and Steve Thorne and wife Jessie of Covington; five grandchildren, Adam, Stephen, Lauren, Daniel and Rebekah; four stepgrandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren. Mrs. Sorrell was born Aug. 12, 1927, to Inez Elizabeth and Cadmus Clark Livingston on a ranch near Cedarvale, N.M. She married Watson Hume Sorrell in 1946. They had five children. Mrs. Sorrell was a homemaker, and she also served as secretary at Immanuel Baptist Church for 18 years. Bell St. Frank was born Feb. 15, 1922, in San Francisco to his parents, Augustin and Fransisca Benites of Spain, and was the youngest of nine children. He was a retired salesman for the Bostitch-Textron Corp. He was well-known around the community for his extensive charity and his sports accomplishments. Golden K Kiwanis, Trinity United Methodist Church where he was a faithful member for more than 40 years, TUMC Methodist Men, Big Brother of the Year in 1968, Meals on Wheels and calling bingo at the Canyons Retirement Home were just a few of his contributions to our community. Frank graduated from San Leandro High in 1941 was offered a full scholarship for baseball, but opted to sign a minor-league contract and began what would become a 25-year affiliation with professional baseball. Frank was the general manager of the Amarillo Gold Sox when our current ballpark was built. He was later the "voice of the Amarillo Giants" as the announcer of the local Class AA ballclub. He spent many years in the Panhandle sports scene. He played or managed in Amarillo, Clovis, Lubbock, Pampa, Borger and Plainview. Frank honorably served our country in the Army Air Forces in World War II. It was during this time that he met and married the love of his life, Ethel. Frank married Ethel Cowsar on March 22, 1944, in La Junta, Colo. From that point on, nothing meant more to Frank than his family. Anyone who knew him would attest to that. He had a huge impact on everyone he met, and he will be missed.
