"Lucky" Akins Charles E. "Lucky" Akins, 80, of Amarillo died Monday, Nov. 13, 2006. Services will be at 3:30 p.m. Thursday in Memorial Park Funeral Home Chapel of Memories, 6969 E. Mr. Akins was born Aug. 6, 1926, in Anadarko, Okla., to Cora and Admiral Wesley Akins. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. Mr. Akins was a truck driver for H.T. Gross, Dwight Cheek and Scrap Processing. He was a member of Arden Road Baptist Church. He married Dorothy Britton on July 18, 1943, in Canyon. He was preceded in death by his mother, Cora Dodd, in 1993; a son, Edward Lee Akins, on Nov. 25, 1998; and a granddaughter, Sarah Jane Akins, on Nov. 3, 1996. Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Dorothy O. Akins of Amarillo; three sons, Thomas R. Akins and wife Kathy of Hesperia, Calif., Jay W. Mrs. Hobson was born July 2, 1919, in Hamilton County, and her parents moved to Spur in 1930 when she was 11 years old. She married Alvin Hobson in 1943 in Spur. She was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers; and a sister. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery by Cox-LaGrone Funeral Home, 4180 Canyon Drive. Ted was born Jan. 18, 1940, in Prichett, Colo., and moved to Amarillo in 1960. He married Wanda Williams on Sept. 30, 1960, in Amarillo. He had been an outside salesman for Austin Distributing since 1977. He loved his job and loved his customers. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed making golf clubs. He had been a member of Paramount Terrace Christian Church for 24 years, and served as president of his Sunday school class. He loved life, and especially loved being "Pa Pa" to his grandchildren. Survivors include his wife, Wanda; a son, Greg Briscoe of Dallas; three daughters, Kim Rule of Plano and Misty Thornberry and Teresa Baker and fiance Tony DeAlessio, all of Amarillo; his twin brother, Ed Briscoe of Amarillo; three sisters, Ruth Ray of Williston, N.D., and Freda McMurray and Alice Boyd, both of Dumas; seven granddaughters; and a great-granddaughter. She attended Waco public schools, South Waco Elementary, Parlor Elementary and A.J. Moore High School. She was a former employee of the Herring Hotel for 15 years. Mrs. Nichols was a faithful member of St. John Baptist Church until her health failed. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sammie Nichols; and two children, Mary Ann Stanley and R.C. She worked for the Amarillo public schools in the cafeteria and with special needs children. She was a member of Southeast Baptist Church. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St. Mr. Le Grand was born Sept. 2, 1926, in Deaf Smith County to Jim and Nobie Le Grand. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and served in the Marine Color Guard that raised the flag on the battleship Arizona. He married Betty Stanley on March 17, 1951, in Los Angeles, and then was called back into service for the Korean conflict. He was a 32nd Degree Mason. Mr. Le Grand was an avid fisherman, hunter and sportsman and shared his love of these activities with his children. After retiring from Pantex, he focused on gardening and coffee with his friends at the Bushland Co-op. He was preceded in death by four brothers and a sister. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd. Dee Carroll Turner Jr., surviving twin, was born March 25, 1931, to Dee Carroll Sr. and Bernice R. Turner, and is survived by his wife of 44 years, Peggy Ellen Turner. He was raised in Stinnett. He served in the Army, stationed in Germany for two years during the Korean War. He married Peggy Turner in 1962. They raised their children in Dumas until he retired from Panhandle Eastern Pipe Line after 30 years. On Dec. 31, 1988, they moved to Amarillo, where he spent the remainder of his years. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Gary Turner; a sister, Dorothy Caroline Turner; and a daughter, Terri Lynn Turner. He raised three children, Terri Lynn Turner, who preceded him in death; John Daniel Turner; Trina Dee Scroggins; and a grandchild, Timothy Joseph Mundell. His daughter, Terri, had Michelle Lynn Rhodes, Jeremy Michael Pendley and Timothy Joseph Mundell. His son, John Daniel Turner has two sons, John Daniel Turner and John Dalton Turner. She was a longtime resident of Hale Center, where she worked in the kitchen at Hi-Plains Hospital and was a member of First Baptist Church. She moved to Amarillo in 1995. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Gibbs, in 1982; a son, Raymond Gibbs, in 2005; and four brothers. Survivors include a son, J.E. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors Martin Road Chapel, 1505 Martin Road. Mr. Reneau was born Feb. 1, 1936, in Woodruff County, Ark., to George Reneau and Lois Weaver Reneau. In 1949, he and his family moved to Amarillo. He worked in many places in Amarillo including Battenfield Motors, Holiday Inn with his mother and the Inn of Amarillo. It was at the Inn of Amarillo that he fell into a dry swimming pool while working, which caused severe injuries that disabled him. Even so, Bill kept a positive outlook and continued being productive. Since October 2003, Bill, known as "Billy" to all the caregivers and staff, resided at Country Club Nursing Home. Bill's church was Northside United Pentecostal, where the pastor, Roger Jonnson, and so many other members took Bill into their hearts and gave him their respect and fellowship. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Mary; his second wife, Lucille; and his precious niece and nephew, Sherry Devon and Bobby Devon. Survivors include his siblings, Hayse Willard Reneau and wife Joyce of Cash, Gene Arthur Reneau of Amarillo, Norman Terry Reneau and wife Donna of Borger, Ethel Jane Cobb and husband George of New Albany, Ind., and Barbara Joyce Smith and husband Ron of Deer Park; and 11 nieces and nephews, among whom Gary Dale befriended his uncle and spent quality time with him over the years. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- William J. "Bill" Thorne William J. "Bill" Thorne, 80, of Amarillo died Saturday, Nov. 11, 2006. Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in First Baptist Church with Dr. Howard Batson and the Rev. Georgia St. Longtime Amarillo ISD and New Mexico administrator, William J. Thorne, 80, died Saturday, Nov. 11, 2006. Mr. Thorne was born to William Quincey and Ruby Minerva Thorne in Spearman. He married Katy Bussard in 1945 in the Locust Grove community in Lipscomb County. They graduated from Canadian High School in 1944. He served in the U.S. Army. Mr. Thorne received a B.S. and a master's degree from West Texas State University and an Ed.S. degree from Peabody College of Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn. He was an elementary principal at Springlake Earth schools, a high school principal in San Jon, N.M., and the superintendent of Grady, N.M., schools. He opened Paramount Terrace School in Amarillo in 1956 and was principal there for 20 years. He then taught at Tascosa High School and West Texas State University and taught senior English at Boys Ranch High School. He also served as principal at Lamar School in AISD. He taught Sunday school classes at First Baptist Church for many years. He was busy in the Boy Scouts, Kids, Inc., and "Y" ball. He worked in the HOSTS (Helping One Student to Succeed) Program in Palo Duro High School and Horace Mann Middle School. He touched many lives in New Mexico and the Panhandle of Texas. He and his wife toured all the continents in the world except Antarctica before he became ill. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and two brothers. Survivors include his wife, Katy Thorne; two sons, Stanley Charles Thorne of Amarillo and Steve Thorne and wife Jessie of Covington; five grandchildren, Adam, Stephen, Lauren, Daniel and Rebekah; four stepgrandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren. Bell St. Frank was born Feb. 15, 1922, in San Francisco to his parents, Augustin and Fransisca Benites of Spain, and was the youngest of nine children. He was a retired salesman for the Bostitch-Textron Corp. He was well-known around the community for his extensive charity and his sports accomplishments. Golden K Kiwanis, Trinity United Methodist Church where he was a faithful member for more than 40 years, TUMC Methodist Men, Big Brother of the Year in 1968, Meals on Wheels and calling bingo at the Canyons Retirement Home were just a few of his contributions to our community. Frank graduated from San Leandro High in 1941 was offered a full scholarship for baseball, but opted to sign a minor-league contract and began what would become a 25-year affiliation with professional baseball. Frank was the general manager of the Amarillo Gold Sox when our current ballpark was built. He was later the "voice of the Amarillo Giants" as the announcer of the local Class AA ballclub. He spent many years in the Panhandle sports scene. He played or managed in Amarillo, Clovis, Lubbock, Pampa, Borger and Plainview. Frank honorably served our country in the Army Air Forces in World War II. It was during this time that he met and married the love of his life, Ethel. Frank married Ethel Cowsar on March 22, 1944, in La Junta, Colo. From that point on, nothing meant more to Frank than his family. Anyone who knew him would attest to that. He had a huge impact on everyone he met, and he will be missed. Mrs. Crump was born Aug. 15, 1920, in Waco. She grew up in Paducah, and graduated from Paducah High School in 1938. She attended Shannon Memorial Hospital School of Nursing for two years. She moved to Parmer County in 1964 from Littlefield. She worked for Hi-Pro Feeds Division of Friona Industries for 18 years, retiring as office manager in 1985. She was a member of Friona United Methodist Church, Friona Senior Citizens, The Poetry Society of Texas and the Southwest Cowboy Poets Association in Amarillo. She was known as a poet in this area, having published two books of western poetry. She had been published many times in other publications. Granville was a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of Dumas Lodge No. 1009 since 1965 and past Patron of Dumas Chapter No. 653 Order of the Eastern Star. Carrol W. Tolleson was born Jan. 10, 1925, to Hugh and Mary Tolleson in Marietta, Okla. He married Virginia Thomas on Jan. 2, 1944, in Hollis, Okla. They were married for 62 years. He was a medic in the Army during World War II. He was a rancher in McLean for 35 years, and a member of McLean United Methodist Church. She worked for Christian Care Center in Mesquite for 10 years before moving to Amarillo in 1985. Once she moved to Amarillo, Eva worked 10 years for Family Service Center distributing food to the needy. She was chosen as Citizen of the Month in Amarillo for her time and service at Family Service Center. Eva also worked as an election judge in Amarillo. She was loved by all who knew her, and she will be missed. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and a daughter, Valera May Willmon.
