Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors Ivy Chapel, 2800 Paramount Blvd., with the Rev. Michael Barringer, officiating. Valerie Kay was born Dec. 29, 1952, in Beckley, W.Va. She was the fourth child born to the late Evelyn D. Pannell Griffin and the late Charles "Pop" Griffin of East Gulf, W.Va. Valerie Kay was raised in East Gulf, W.Va. She attended East Gulf Tabernacle Baptist Church during her early years, where she sang in the Junior Choir and was a member of the Junior Mission. Valerie Kay was united in marriage to Ernest Barringer on Dec. 30, 1988 in Charleston, S.C. They moved to the Amarillo area in 1995. Since 1996, Valerie devoted her time and energies to establishing safe, affordable housing for those in Amarillo who might not have otherwise owned a home. Her passion and drive for Amarillo Habitat for Humanity resulted in new homes for 30-plus families. Valerie served as executive director, developer and mentor for Habitat families. Survivors include her husband, Ernest Barringer of Amarillo; her children, Kim Tara Whitten of Frederick, Md., Melissa Adams of Houston, Michael T. Griffin and wife Nicole and Rosetta Barringer, all of Columbus, Ohio, and Chamae Barringer of Portsmith, Va.; her sisters and brothers, Cynthia Ann Thomas, Lorenzo C. Griffin and Larry G. Services will be at 11 a.m. today in Robertson Funeral Directors Chapel Of Memories in Clarendon with the Rev. Jim Aveni, vicar of St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church in Clarendon, officiating. Burial with Air Force honors will be in Citizens Cemetery. Mr. Stewart was born April 1, 1933, in Unionville, Mo., to John Ray and Audrey Pearl Haines Stewart. He married Maggie Lula Morrow on Nov. 18, 1968, in Amarillo. He served for 21 years in the U.S. Air Force from 1951 to 1972. He moved to Clarendon in 1977 and was self-employed as a carpenter. He had been a resident of Amarillo this past year. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Clarendon. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Feb. 22, 2004. Mr. Brown was born Aug. 12, 1938, in Valencia, N.M. He graduated from Dimmit High School, and played football while attending there. Jerry was a resident of Amarillo, and also lived in New Mexico and Colorado for the past 12 years. His personality reflected of one that liked to be funny and joke with others. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Survivors include two sons, Jerry Brown of Canyon and Robby Brown of Nederland; a daughter, Rejena Brown of Atlanta,; four brothers, Charlie Brown of Rio Rancho, N.M., Robert Brown and Glen Brown, both of Tucson, Ariz., and Franklin Brown of Folsom, Calif; two sisters, Betty of Amarillo and Virginia of Hereford; a special grandson, Justin Brown of Amarillo; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Albin M. "Shady" Kuehler: 1915-2006 Albin M. "Shady" Kuehler, 91, died Sunday, Nov. 19, 2006. Rosary will be said at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 21, at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church. Mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church, with Msgr. Joseph Tash, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens cemetery by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St. Mr. Kuehler was born March 1, 1915, the second of eight children born to George and Mary Kuelher. He graduated from Groom High School in 1934. He was a high school football standout and never missed an extra point kick all during his high school years. His love for football never diminished. On Feb. 23, 1935, Kuehler married Helen E. Coffman. She preceded him in death on Oct. 10, 1996, after 62 years of marriage. The couple resided in Gray, Moore, Carson and Randall counties in the Texas Panhandle and in Cimarron County, Okla., where Kuehler was engaged in farming and ranching operations. He was a faithful steward of the land and always practiced putting more back into the land than he took from it. No written contract was never more binding to Kuehler than his word. He believed in doing what he said he would do and that belief was his banner. For the past 30 months, Kuehler was dutifully attended by the staffs at Craig Retirement Home and Ware Memorial Nursing Home. In addition to his wife, Kuehler was preceded in death by an infant son; his parents; siblings, Francis Kuehler, Paul Kuehler, Cletus Kuehler, James Kuehler, Rosella Elrod; and a great-granddaughter, Emma Kuehler. Survivors left to cherish his long legacy of hard work and fair play are three sons, George of Amarillo, Don and wife Maureen of Clay Center, Neb., and John of Vons, Colo.; a daughter, Alby K. Peters and husband Don of Amarillo; a sister, Loraine Dearing of Muleshoe; a brother, Robert Kuehler and wife Alice of Groom; and two sisters-in-law, Wanda Kuehler of Austin and Margaret Kimmins and husband John of Amarillo. Bell St. Mr. Durham was born May 18, 1941, in Paris, Texas, to James and Ruby Bartlett Durham, Sr. He was a well-known attorney in the Amarillo area for more than 40 years. Before entering the field of law, he served his country in the Army from 1958 to 1964. Mr. Durham earned his preparatory education at Paris Junior College, and East Texas State University in 1963. While studying at Baylor, he served the university in 1965 on the editorial board and as the editor-in- chief of the Baylor Law Review in 1966. On May 20, 1965 he was initiated by Hemphill Inn as a member of the International Legal Fraternity of Phi Delta Phi, and was elected a member of Alpha Chi on February 22, 1966. He received his bachelor of law degree on Aug. 26, 1966, and was admitted to the Bar in Texas the same year. He was admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court; the U.S. Court of Appeals, Fifth Circuit; the U.S. District Court, Northern District of Texas, and served on the Supreme Court in New Mexico in 1967. In addition to these achievements, he was a member of the Amarillo Bar Association; State Bar of Texas; State Bar of New Mexico; Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association and the Panhandle Family Law Association, performed Pro Bono work for Legal Aid of Northwest Texas, and was a member of the Amarillo Symphony. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Rachel Durham; his father, James David Durham Sr.; a brother, Jerry Durham; and a sister, Ruby Jean Durham. She was a loving and caring person, and will be missed by all who knew her. Robert Ned Lohr, a great American, on Saturday, Nov, 18, 2006, went home to join all the saints who from their labors rest. Mr. Lohr passed away at the age of 80 in Amarillo, Texas. Mr. Lohr was a man whose love of family, church and country was manifested in countless ways, simple and profound. He matched that love with an abiding dedication to service, to his nation as a Navy seaman during World War II, then to his family as a constant example of steadfast loyalty, to his career as a longtime employee of the sugar refining industry, and to his community through the American Legion, the Lions Club and Toastmasters. Born in Loveland, Colo., on Dec. 2, 1925, Mr. Lohr graduated from Loveland High School in 1943 and immediately joined the U.S. Navy with friends Hector Wilson and Gene Gano. After shipping out from Bremerton, Wash., he served in the Pacific theater, at Pearl Harbor and Guadalcanal, repairing Navy fighter planes aboard an aircraft carrier. After completing his Navy service in 1946, Mr. Lohr married Carol Jean Rogers on June 23, 1946, in Estes Park, Colo. Mr. Lohr was a 23-year employee of Great Western Sugar in Loveland and later in Hereford and Presque Isle, Maine. He and Carol, his wife of 60 years, retired in Hereford, moved to El Paso in 1989 and then to Amarillo in 1999. He was an active member of First United Methodist Church of Hereford, was twice commander of the American Legion, president of Toastmasters and a devoted Lions Club member. Bob Lohr leaves a legacy of unconditional love, unwavering support, deep patriotism, a robust sense of humor and a strong confidence in his own ability to find and follow the right path. He is survived by his wife; a son John of Amarillo; a daughter Lynda of Vancouver, Wash.; a sister, Betty Nunn of Kremmling, Colo.; a brother, Bert Lohr of Fort Oglethorpe, Ga.; and five grandchildren. Army personnel from Fort Hood. Arrangements are by Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors. Mr. Hawkins was a veteran of the U. S. Army, serving during World War II in Sicily and Italy, and later enlisted in the National Guard, serving another 26 years. After the war, he returned to Pampa and was a partner with his father and two brothers in Hawkins Radio Lab, from which he retired in 1984. Nelson, Pampa, TX 79065. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rogers Franklin Hester Sr.: 1926-2006 CLARENDON - Rogers Franklin Hester Sr., 80, died Saturday, Nov. 18, 2006. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Community Fellowship Church with the Rev. Roger Smith, pastor, and the Rev. Richard Dickerson of Bykota Baptist Church in Amarillo officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Citizens Cemetery by Robertson Funeral Directors. Mr. Hester was born in Clarendon to Jean and Florence Hester. He was raised in Clarendon and graduated from high school in 1943. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1944 and served until Dec. 19, 1945. He married Betty Jo Risenhoover on June 26, 1947, and they moved to and made a life in Amarillo. Rogers worked for the U.S. Postal Service in 1947 as a foot carrier and retired as fleet manager in April 1983. After retirement they moved to Clarendon and built a home. He served for several years as scoutmaster of Troop 14 in Amarillo and was past president of the Letter Carriers Union and the Supervisors Union. He was the Donley County Republican Chairman for eight years. He was a charter member of Community Fellowship Church in Clarendon. He was preceded in death by his father, Jean Hester; his mother, Florence Hester; an infant brother, Edwin Jones Hester; and a sister, Cymantha Earl. Survivors include his wife, Betty Jo Hester of Clarendon; two daughters, Janice Gail Greer and husband Larry and Patricia Lynn McCurdy and husband Dickie, all of Amarillo; a son, Rogers Hester Jr. and wife Linda of Allen; seven granddaughters, Sherelle Wanderscheid, Lesley Harris, Krystal Seymour, Shayla Yeo, Lori Guinn, Lindy Billington and Kandice Greer; eight great- granddaughters; and two great-grandsons. Zach was a senior at Dalhart High School. He liked to dance, play football, paintball, ice skate, ski, meet new people, hockey, and being center of attention. He had a funny personality, always joking around, and loved to EAT! He liked playing monopoly with his family, he loved being with his family, and being happy. He was very outgoing, loved to play soccer, basketball, football, fish, power lift, roller-blade, and he was a great talker and really loved his moms lasagna. Underwood, U.S. Army, 89, died Saturday, Nov. 18, 2006. Memorial rosary will be said at 7:15 p.m. today in the Army Residence Community Chapel. Underwood, U.S. Army, 89, formerly public affairs officer at the 4th Army U.S. Army, Fort Sam Houston, and a survivor of the Bataan death march, died Nov. 18, 2006, at the Army Residence Community in San Antonio. He was born Oct. 6, 1917, in Sugar Lake, Mo., and lived most of his youth in Kansas. He graduated from the University of Missouri in June 1939, with a degree in journalism and an Army ROTC commission. He rejoined the Amarillo Globe-News, where he had worked in the summer as a reporter. Charles was called to active duty in February 1941 with the 2nd Infantry Division at Fort Sam Houston. He was reassigned to the 31st Infantry in Manila, Philippines, in May 1941. With the fall of Bataan in April 1942, he became a prisoner of war of the Japanese until liberated in Japan in August 1945. He and the former Geneva "Jimmie" Sullivan of Amarillo were married at Fort Sam Houston on Nov. 3, 1945. His more than 31 years of active military service included command of infantry, armored infantry and armored units from platoon through brigade. Most of his staff assignments were in information and public affairs. He received a master’s degree in journalism from the University of Missouri in June 1950. Charles served twice in the Pentagon in the Office of Public Affairs and was the chief of the public information division from June 1964 to June 1966. He also was information assistant to two secretaries of the Army and senior aide to the Commander-in-Chief, U.S. Army, and Europe. When he retired in Honolulu in May 1972 he was chief of public affairs, U.S. Army, Pacific, and had held a similar assignment with Commander-in-Chief, Pacific. His decorations include Legion of Merit with cluster, Bronze Star with cluster, Army Commendation with cluster, Purple Heart with cluster, Combat Infantry Badge, Glider Badge, Army General Staff badge and various campaign medals. When Charles left San Antonio in 1964, he was made an alcade by the late Walter McAllister, then-mayor of San Antonio, and was presented a certificate of appreciation from the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce. When the family returned to San Antonio in 1972, he became active in the San Antonio Retired Officers chapter, serving as vice- president for public affairs for a number of years and was involved in Republican Party activities as a precinct chairman and a member of the Bexar County Republican committee. He was a member of St. John Neuman Catholic Church, Alpha Tau Omega social fraternity, Military Officers Association of America, Association of the U.S. Army, 31st Infantry Association, American Defenders of Bataan and Corregidor, Ex-Prisoners of War and Disabled Veterans Association. Survivors include his wife, Geneva; a daughter, Victoria Lambdin and husband Mark and granddaughter, Rebecca of San Marcos; two sons, Dr. Charles C. Underwood Jr. of Kittery Point, Maine, and his three daughters, Megan Christian and husband, Jamie and their daughter, Riley of South Carolina, Sarah Fahrbach and husband, Chris of New York and Emily Underwood of New York, and son, James Underwood and two grandchildren, James E. Underwood, currently stationed in Korea, and Michelle Underwood of San Antonio.
