Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Howardwick Baptist Church in Howardwick with the Rev. Jim Powell officiating. Burial will be in Citizen's Cemetery in Clarendon by Cox-LaGrone Funeral Home, 4180 Canyon Drive, in Amarillo. Mr. Maxey was born May 22, 1918, in Afton, Okla., and lived most of his life in Clarendon. He served in the U.S. Air Force in World War II in the Philippines. He married Virginia McGowen in 1952 in New Mexico. She passed away in 1978. He married Lena Singleterry in 1987 in Clarendon. He worked as a cook on the JA Ranch, and retired from the Clarendon Independent School District. He moved to Amarillo in 2003 from Howardwick. He attended Howardwick Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Lena Maxey of Amarillo; a daughter, Penny Mooney of Amarillo; a stepdaughter, Judy Spiker of Amarillo; two stepsons, Dewayne Singleterry of Huntsville and Eddie Singleterry of Guymon, Okla.; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sammie Louise Nation Sammie Louise Nation, 75, of Amarillo died Saturday, Dec. 2, 2006. Mr. Burnsed was born Aug. 7, 1934, in Brookston. He graduated from Texarkana, Texas, High School in 1953, where he earned all-state football honors and was awarded a football scholarship to the University of Arkansas. He married Shirley Moore in 1955 in Direct. He joined the Amarillo Fire Department in 1956. He retired as captain in 1989 after 33 years of service. He was an avid golfer. She married C.O. Willis in 1969 in Brownfield. Mrs. Willis raised 11 children, six of whom were her own. She was employed as a school bus driver for many years for both Dumas and Brownfield schools. She enjoyed fishing and painting, and she loved spending time with her family. She was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother and great- grandmother. She was a member of Church Alive Global Ministries and loved the Lord with all her heart. She was preceded in death by her husband, C.O. Willis; her parents, Lewis and Mable Ervin; a daughter-in-law, Kristi Willis; and a stepdaughter, Vicky Beck. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery by Memorial Park Funeral Home, 6969 E. Interstate 40. Mr. Harstrom served with the Marine Air Force in World War II in the Southwest Pacific Theater. After returning from World War II, he received his bachelor's and master's degrees from North Texas University in Denton. Mr. Harstrom taught history at Bryan Adams High School in Dallas for 30 years. After retiring, he taught British medieval history at Brown Mackie College in Salina, Kan. His last teaching position was with the University of Wisconsin extension in Manotowac, Wis. Mr. Harstrom and his wife, Kathleen, moved to Amarillo in 1996. He was a member of the Episcopal church. He was preceded in death by a brother, Alex Males, and a daughter, Catherine Elizabeth Harstrom. Kenneth Elmore Duncan was born March 1, 1919, to James Ezra Duncan and Edna Etheridge in Harmon County, Okla. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II from 1942 until 1946. He was employed by Imperial Chevrolet in Canyon for a number of years, and was self-employed in the trucking business. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Jennings Duncan, in 2004. Mr. Grady was born Feb. 18, 1919, in Donley County to Ralph Burk Grady Sr. and Roberta Eldridge Grady. He had lived in Hall County most of his life before moving to Clarendon in 2001. He married Jo Ann Ritter on Jan. 17, 1954, at Clovis, N.M. She preceded him in death on Jan. 26, 1992. He then married Dorothy Irene Boswell Helms on Jan. 3, 1993, at Clarendon. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and was a member of the VFW. He had been a farmer and rancher most of his life. He was also a member of Clarendon Church of the Nazarene. He was also preceded in death by his parents; five sisters; and a brother. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. today in First Baptist Church with Kelly Raymond and Jim Reyna, pastors, officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery by Bailey-Ware Funeral Home. Mr. Sharp died Saturday, Dec. 2, 2006, at Shamrock Hospital after a lengthy illness. His body was worn out and tired, and he has gone home to be whole again. Mr. Sharp was born Oct. 13, 1915, in Tuckerman, Ark. The Sharp family moved to McLean in 1927. He married Wanda Geneva Blaylock on Jan. 9, 1937, in Wheeler. They drove directly from Wheeler to a ranch northwest of McLean, where he was a cowboy and she became ranch cook. They had many adventures during those years. Maturing during the Depression, Mr. Sharp worked at whatever was available, and a various times was employed as a truck driver and cowboy. At the beginning of World War II, they lived in Portland, Ore., where he worked in the shipyard. Shortly after daughter Peggy was born, they returned to McLean, and soon he joined the Navy, serving the remainder of the war in San Diego. After retirement from Warren Petroleum, he was a night watchman for McLean Feed Lot. Later, he and Wanda traveled frequently, working for his brother-in- law in construction. They also used their travel trailer for trips about the country, often taking their two grandchildren with them. They made countless trips to Dumas, never missing an activity in which either grandchild was involved. Arnold loved Wanda. They would have been married 70 years Jan. 9, 2007. She was his nurse during the past few years, and his best friend always. He was proud of his family and doted on his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In his eyes, they "might not always be right, but they could sure do no wrong." He saw to it that his family had everything they needed and most of what they wanted. He loved horses his entire life, and was still riding at age 78, when his health began to fail. His last horse, Punkin, was a gift from Creed and Anna Jean Lamb after Corky died. They could not imagine Arnold without a horse. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sam E. Sharp and Shell Fitzwater Sharp; a brother, Jack Sharp; and a sister, Relia Sharp Ayers. His only son, Val, was killed in 1967 in Vietnam. Survivors include his wife, Wanda; a daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and Duwain Baer of McLean; a grandson, Tracy Lyle Gordin of Dumas; a granddaughter, Val Marie and husband Larry Dutcher of Dumas; two great-granddaughters, Shelby Marie and Katie Jean Dutcher of Dumas; a stepgrandson, Beau and wife Shirlene Baer of Daphne, Ala.; stepgreat-grandchildren, Creede and Chloe Baer of Daphne and Kryslyn Baer; and a stepgreat-great-grandson of Amarillo. Dr. Ashby was born Jan. 14, 1917, to Jesse and Mabel Ashby in McLean, Texas, the fourth of four children. He had a long and successful practice in Pampa, Texas, beginning in the years during World War II and extending over the next 50 years, as both a family practitioner and general surgeon. Survivors include his wife, Helen; five children, Charles H. Kenny was born Jan. 13, 1964, in Shamrock, Texas, to Kenneth and Hazel Simmons Gipson and passed away on Sunday, Dec. 3, 2006, at Southwestern Memorial Hospital in Weatherford. Kenny was raised and attended school in Amarillo, Texas, graduating from Palo Duro High School in 1982. In 1985, he graduated from Amarillo College. On July 18, 1987, Kenny married Lisa Summers in Amarillo. He worked for an uncle while in Amarillo, and then moved to Weatherford where he worked for Raven Co. for five years. In 1991, Kenny started working for Dobson Communications where he had been the last 15 years. Kenny enjoyed family activities, sports, hunting, fishing and working on the farm with his father. He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Jimmy Simmons and Bob Gipson; and his father-in-law, Harm Summers. Gowdy was born Feb. 12, 1927, in Tucumcari. He was reared in the Porter community, graduating from Porter High School. He serviced small appliances and water wells until his health failed. He loved horses, raising and training them for many years.
