Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Polk Street United Methodist Church. Arrangements are by Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors Memorial Chapel, Fifth Avenue and Pierce Street. Mr. Askew was born June 22, 1914, to Geddes Westbrook Askew and William A. Askew Sr. in the family home at 1609 S. Polk Street. He graduated from Amarillo High School, attended Amarillo College, jokingly called Lincoln Street University in the old Municipal Auditorium, and graduated from Southern Methodist University, where he was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. Bill Askew could tell stories for hours about growing up in Amarillo with friends who would someday become leaders in the community. Putt Powell once wrote about the Harrison Street Scrubs, who played "sand-lot" football. Football did not become a major interest for Bill Askew, but early years of hunting and fishing with his father certainly did. Tales of one monstrous catfish always ended with laughter about how the fish pushed open both sides of the family's Model A Ford. Mr. Askew married Frances Robertson, another Amarillo native, on Sept. 3, 1938, at Polk Street Methodist Church. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with family and friends in 1988 before her death the following year. Mr. Askew became a partner in Askew & Brown, the family business founded by his father and J. Hal Brown and initially located in the Paramount Building at Ninth and Polk Streets. His sister, Mary Louise Askew Brown, and brother, Middleton L. Askew, also joined the firm that wrote insurance for many of Amarillo's homes and businesses and that made and serviced loans for companies including Aetna Life Insurance Co., John Hancock Life Insurance Co., New York Life Insurance Co. and Investors Diversified Services. After the family sold the business in the early 1970s, Bill and Frances Askew spent most of their time building a summer cabin in Glen Casey's Colorado development at Spanish Peaks. Family members recall formative experiences living in a tent, building a house on almost solid rock, and taking Saturday night baths at the Spanish Peaks Lodge. Some of the family became expert anglers in their spare time, a tradition sustained today by two-thirds of Mr. Askew's family. Trips to Colorado slowed as all the Askew family volunteered to launch Amarillo's first Funfest in 1978. Other community service revolved around their family's activities at Polk Street United Methodist Church, the Don Harrington Discovery Center, YWCO and Preservation Amarillo. In support of Amarillo's work to nominate properties to the National Register of Historic Places, Mr. Askew spent hours recording early building, moving and demolition permits issued for architects, contractors, homeowners and business owners whom he knew personally. Mr. Askew married Carolyn Brown in 1991 and became father and grandfather to another family who is helping to shape the future of Amarillo. Getting a good education and hard work were part of every family conversation. Mr. Askew provided financial support for his children and grandchildren to attend college. That longtime commitment culminated in establishment of the Bill and Frances Askew Leadership Scholarship in the West Texas A&M University Foundation and the Askew Family Scholarship in the Amarillo College Foundation. For many years, he maintained perfect attendance in the Downtown Kiwanis Club and was a member of Polk Street United Methodist Church, the 50-50 Sunday School Class and Spanish Peaks Landowners Association. Survivors include his wife, Carolyn; daughter, Betty Askew Howell and husband Joe of Amarillo; son, Robert Askew and wife Faye of Lake City, Colo.; son, John Paul Askew and wife Judith of Amarillo, Richard Brown and wife Kay of Amarillo, and Cathy Brown Dodson and husband Jack of Amarillo. He loved his grandchildren, Melissa Howell of Colleyville, Jennifer Howell McElreath of Amarillo, Larry and Bryan Askew of Colorado Springs, Colo., April Askew Ater of Flagstaff, Ariz., and Christy Askew of Wichita, Kan. He was equally proud of Stephanie Brown Taylor and Clayton Brown. The family suggests memorials be to Polk Street United Methodist Church or a favorite charity.
