Memorial services are pending. Professor emeritus and Amarillo civic leader Zell Rodgers SoRelle, 95, of Clarendon died Dec. 27, 2006. Listed in The World List of Phoneticians, Distinguished Scholars of America and Outstanding Educators of America, Mrs. SoRelle earned bachelor's and master's degrees from West Texas State University, and a Ph.D. in phonetics from the University of Denver. Her distinguished teaching career at WTSU lasted from 1962 to 1977. She was awarded recognition as Professor Emeritus for Education and selected twice to give a paper for the Phonetic Society of Japan in Japan. In 1977, she received the Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation Award. During her university career, Zell was a member of Texas Speech Association, the Speech Communication Association of America, the International Society of Phonetic Sciences, the Phonetic Society of Japan, the Linguistic Society of America, The American Dialect Society, the Southern Speech Association, Pi Kappa Delta, Alpha Psi Omega and Chi Omega. She was selected to Outstanding Educators of America and the Directory of International Biography. She received a Women's Forum Award. Born in Clarendon, Mrs. SoRelle was the daughter of Beulah Clara Simmons and James Pinkney Rodgers. She graduated from Clarendon High School and Clarendon College. In the early '30s, Mrs. SoRelle began her teaching career at the Barefield one-room schoolhouse on the J.A. Ranch at the age of 17. She was mentioned in Ripley's Believe it or Not when, during one year, she had only one student. There were only five taxpayers in the county. Subsequently, the schoolhouse was moved to Texas Tech's campus and given historical recognition. In 1937, Zell married Seth Augustus "Jack" SoRelle. They lived in Borger for several years. In 1942, she obtained a pilot's license, one of the first women in the Texas Panhandle to complete such training. During World War II, she was asked by Jacqueline Cochran to join the Women's Army Corps, but declined due to impending motherhood. In the 1940s, the SoRelles moved to Amarillo. Mrs. SoRelle was a member of the Amarillo Symphony board for more than 20 years. Working with Becky Reeder Arnold and Katherine and Horace Wilson, research was done and plans were made to form the Amarillo Symphony Guild. Continuing civic efforts to support the symphony, Zell SoRelle and Mrs. T.J. Wagner Jr. worked with others to institute the Symphony Ball. As the musical drama, "Texas" was conceived, Mrs. SoRelle helped raise funds and was an underwriter for this new endeavor. She served on the musical's board for a number of years. Returning with her husband, Jack, to Clarendon in 1982, Mrs. SoRelle undertook a new project, the restoration of a Queen Anne Victorian home, now called the S.W. Lowe House. She secured a Texas Historical Marker for the house. It is listed on the National Register. Mrs. SoRelle loved to share her beautiful home with the public by opening by appointment for Victorian teas and tours, musical and poetry reading programs. She presented stories of her art collections accumulated during her world travels to all ages from the College Elderhostel groups and civic clubs to high school home economics classes to elementary school students. Zell revitalized the whole idea of the historic mission in Clarendon, starting with her intense interest in the restoration of her Queen Anne Victorian. Attention grew and enthusiasm spread to the courthouse - now a project in glorious completion. Her dedication was for the whole area and it involved everything that she had grown up with. She did so much for Clarendon to inspire people just by being herself and talking about her own interests and her love of Clarendon. She was responsible for the recognition of two cemeteries - the one in Goldston and the one in Jerico. During the years of her return to Clarendon, Mrs. SoRelle was a member of the Donley County Historical Committee, Les Beaux Arts Club, First Methodist Church of Clarendon and a strong supporter of the activities of Clarendon College, Saints Roost Museum and Clarendon Chamber of Commerce. Zell SoRelle's last years were spent in close proximity with the out-of-doors. In 1993, assisted by Texas Parks and Wildlife, Texas Forest Service, Natural Resources Conservation Services and Donley County Soil and Water Conservation District, she established the James Pinkney Rodgers Bird Sanctuary on 110 acres on the outskirts of Clarendon. This is the only song bird sanctuary in a 26-county area. It is listed on the Panhandle Plains Wildlife Trail. She observed, listened and marveled at the wonder of the natural environment. Her husband, Jack, preceded her in death in 2000. Survivors include a daughter, Sara SoRelle. The family suggests memorials be to the Amarillo-Panhandle Humane Society, P.O. Box 30102, Amarillo, TX 79120-0102; The Audubon Society, P.O. Box 30939, Amarillo, TX 79120; any no-kill animal shelter; the Amarillo Symphony, P.O. During her entire lifetime, Mary would return to the farm during the summer, whether to help cut and buck hay or just to provide her two boys with a great summer retreat in the Northwest. Mary was a graduate of Centralia High School and briefly attended the Shelton Police Academy and Centralia Junior College. However, in 1974, Mary moved to Chicago to be with her sister, Linda. Mary was hired by both Delta Airlines and TransAmerica International Airlines. Mary chose TIA, which was an international charter airline. The Washington farm girl was off to see the world from her first base of operations in New York City. Mary flew charters worldwide for 10 years and her trips included Africa, Europe, Southwest Asia, the Middle East and Iron Curtain countries. Her bases included Houston, Oakland and Lake Tahoe. The airline was disbanded in 1986 and Mary chose to move to Palm Springs, Calif., to once again be close to her sister. She worked for Marriott's Desert Springs Resort as the VIP and hospitality manager. It was during this time that Mary met Rik while he was touring the West Coast with Marty Haggard. A whirlwind romance followed, and the two were married six weeks later on Aug. 18, 1988, in Gallatin, Tenn. The two, with their first son Cody, moved to Amarillo in 1992. Shortly thereafter, their second son Dylan was born. It was during this time that Mary devoted her time to raising the two boys and volunteering at Child Garden School, Bivins Elementary, Austin Middle School and then Tascosa High School. Mary became a member of the Junior League in 1994 and was co-chairperson for the 2001 Funfest. Mary was also deeply involved with Center City and was the chairperson for the "A Night in Havana" fundraiser event. After the boys became older, Mary returned to work and was employed at Amarillo Dermatology Inc. Mary's love and compassion for her family and friends (and her dogs and cats) was a gift to all who knew her or came in contact with her. Her joy for life was unmatched! She loved cooking and entertaining, trout fishing, running, camping and watching her boys play football, baseball, soccer, guitar and drums.
