Cross Merle S. Cross, 95, of Amarillo died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2007. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors Bell Avenue Chapel, 5400 S. Bell St., with the Rev. Ken Cole officiating. Graveside services will be at 3:30 p.m. Monday in Darrouzett Cemetery with the Rev. Dan Carter of Follett United Methodist Church officiating, and Masonic rites by Ochiltree Lodge No. 910. Mr. Cross was born Sept. 29, 1911, in Ivanhoe, Okla., to Ada and Simon Cross. A longtime resident of Darrouzett, he was manager of the Darrouzett Co-op Association and retired as president of First National Bank of Darrouzett. Mr. Cross had served on the Darrouzett City Commission and the Lipscomb County Historical Committee. He was a member of the Darrouzett Lions Club and had worked with the Boy Scouts. Mr. Cross was the past master of Darrouzett Masonic Lodge No. 1156 and a member of Ochiltree Lodge No. 910. He also held memberships in the El Paso Scottish Rite Bodies and the Borger York Rite Bodies. He had received his 65- year service pin from the Grand Lodge of Texas. He was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Amarillo Chapter 787. Mr. Cross was a member of Darrouzett United Methodist Church, where he served on the administrative board and as a Sunday school teacher. In Amarillo, he was an associate member of Saint Stephen United Methodist Church and the Pathfinders Sunday school class. He was active in the Darrouzett Senior Citizens Association, the Darrouzett Chamber of Commerce and was a member of the American Rose Society. He married Velma Fisher on Feb. 6, 1936, in Darrouzett. Survivors include his wife, Velma; three children, Larry L. Cross and wife Dolores of Amarillo, Marilyn Cross Maynard and husband Ken of Canyon and Stephen F. Cross and wife Suellen of Borger; six grandchildren, Barbara and Rick German of Kingwood, Mary and Jon Barton of Wimberley, Wendy and Louis Shaheen II of Granbury, Scott and Jennifer Maynard of Canyon, Michelle and Dan Dear of Amarillo and Mark Cross of Houston; eight great-grandchildren, Cory Bigham of Marble Falls, Breanna Bigham of McAlester, Okla., Branson Thomas and Christopher Barton both of Wimberley, Hudson Dear and Hadley Dear, both of Amarillo, Cadence Maynard of Canyon and Parker Dear of Fort Worth. Amarillo Globe-News, Jan. 13, 2007 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Roy Daugherty, M.D. Roy Daugherty, M.D., 83, of Amarillo died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2007. Memorial services will be at a later date at Baylor Medical School. Local Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St. Dr. Daugherty was born Feb. 4, 1923, in Kansas City, Mo., to Raymond Andrew and Florence Penrose Daugherty. He graduated from Central High School in Kansas City. He graduated from Kansas City Junior and Teacher's College, then went on to attend pre-med at Westminster College in Fulton, Mo. He then spent eight months in Norman, Okla., at the Naval Hospital as a corpsman. In June 1948, he graduated with an M.D. from Baylor University College of Medicine in Houston. He was a member of the first class to graduate from the Houston campus. He served his medical internship at Kansas City General Hospital. Dr. Daugherty served his three-year residency in internal medicine at the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Houston, completing it in July 1950. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a physician and during the Korean War with the Marine Corps as a naval physician in Japan. Dr. Daugherty married Jacqueline Estes on March 5, 1948. He practiced in Borger in 1953, and then moved to Amarillo in 1954, where he began a medical practice in internal medicine until his retirement in 1988. After retirement, he did medical exams for the military until his health prevented him from working any longer. During his long successful career he served on the board of directors of Western National Bank from 1968 until 1986. He also served as the chief of medicine at St. Anthony's several times and served as president of NWTH medical staff from 1977 to 1978. He was a member of St. Stephen United Methodist Church and the South Amarillo Kiwanis Club. Prior to his death, Dr. Daugherty requested his body be donated to the Baylor School of Medicine for medical research. Dr. Daugherty was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Roy Philip, in 1983; and two sisters, Beulah Wisner and Mildred Weber. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Jackie; his children, Lonnie, Nancy and Carl and his wife Terry, all of Amarillo; four grandchildren, Abbey and Eric, Shannon and Takishya; six great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Ruth Bodenhamer of Kansas City and Jean Mogen of Kerrville. Ms. Green was born Oct. 22, 1958, in Childress. She was employed at Pantex for 15 years and was a caregiver to all around her. Mr. Willingham attended school in McLean, graduating from McLean High School. He had owned and operated J & M Machine Co. since 1978. Box 939, Pampa, TX 79066-0939. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Alton "Shorty" Roark HEREFORD - Alton "Shorty" Roark, 81, died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2007, in Amarillo. Celebration of life services will be at 10 a.m. today in Parkside Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. Joe Shultz officiating. Burial will be in West Park Cemetery with military honors by the Hereford High School JROTC unit. Mr. Roark was born Sept. 15, 1925, in Foard County, the son of Jim and Hattie Roark. Upon graduating from Crowell High School, Shorty joined the U.S. Marine Corps. He served during World War II with the 4th Marine Division, 3rd Group, 5th Amphibious Unit. He fought in many major battles in the South Pacific, including the invasion of the Rio and Namur Islands, Kwajalein Atoll Island, Guam and Marianas Islands, the invasion of Leyte and the invasion of Luzon. Upon his discharge from the Marine Corps, Shorty went to Texas A&M University and graduated in 1946 with a degree in agriculture. On Sept. 1, 1947, he married Mary Edwards in Crowell. Shorty retired in Hereford after 21 years as the manager of Farr Better Feeds and was a member of Hereford VFW Post No. 4818. Survivors include his wife, Mary; a daughter, Lisa Waller and husband David of Houston; and two grandchildren. Frankie Andrews Weatherby was born Feb. 21, 1915, in the Rivercamp Community, near Childress, to Thornton and Laura Dickerson Andrews. In 1921, Frankie's parents purchased a farm 2.5 miles southeast of McLean where she, a brother, Clyde, and a sister, Myrle, were raised. Frankie graduated from McLean High School in 1932. She enrolled at West Texas State Teachers College the next year where she met her lifelong love and husband, Howard "Prof" Weatherby. They were married in 1936. While husband Howard finished his Smith Hughes Certificate at Texas Tech to become a vocational agriculture teacher, Frankie taught school at Enterprise on the Bar Lo Ranch near McLean and the next year she taught at Center School east of Twitty. Frankie and Howard moved to Shamrock in 1937, where they resided until their deaths. The Weatherbys contributed greatly to the Shamrock community. Howard Weatherby taught vocational agriculture at Shamrock High for 38 years. Frankie was a homemaker and active in the community, including being the Worthy Matron of the Shamrock Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star, a Sunday school teacher and an active member of First United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard, in December 2004; her parents; a brother, Clyde Andrews; and a sister, Myrle Humble. Survivors include two sons, Frank Weatherby of Shamrock and Tom Weatherby and wife Debbie of Reno, Nev.; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
