Memorial services will be at 5 p.m. Thursday in Cox-LaGrone Funeral Home Benton Chapel, 4180 Canyon Drive. Mrs. Zimmerman was born July 21, 1926, in Mount Morris, Ill., to Ralph and Nellie Crowell, was raised there and was a graduate of Mount Morris High School. She married the love of her life, Ward K. Zimmerman, on Dec. 6, 1953. He passed away on April 15, 1979. She lived in California from 1953 until 1986, when she moved to Amarillo. She worked as an accountant for many years. She was a dear friend and associate of Jim and Rose Martha Cates, working with the Donut Stop for the past 20 years. She was known by many and loved by all. She will be dearly missed. Survivors include a stepdaughter, Sally Nelson and husband Gordon; a stepson, Stuart Zimmerman; a stepsister, Juanita Miller and husband Marvin; a stepbrother, Marlowe Glotfelty and wife Lavonne; and five grandchildren. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors Memorial Chapel, Fifth Avenue and Pierce Street, with the Rev. Robert Field, retired Baptist minister, officiating. Alfred was born Jan. 28, 1931, in Folsom, N.M. He served in the Korean War. He had been a resident of Amarillo for about 25 years. For most of that time he worked as a service station attendant for the Shell station on Georgia Street and at Woody's on Sixth Avenue. Mr. Chavez enjoyed playing dominoes, cards and watching western movies. He loved spending time with all of his family, especially his three grandchildren, Dillon, Mikaela and Jacob Chavez, with whom he lived. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a son, Kenneth Paul Chavez. Survivors include a brother, Johnny Sandoval of Albuquerque, N.M.; a sister, Dolores Heuer and husband Gary of Albuquerque; three daughters, Lori Chaparro, Sara Chavez and Stacy Chavez, all of Amarillo; three sons, Lawrence Chavez of Albuquerque and Charles Chavez and wife Tina and Michael Chavez and wife Dana, all of Amarillo; 19 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Juanita Koen Juanita Koen, 86, of Amarillo died Monday, Jan. 15, 2007. She married Clarence Koen on May 19, 1939. He preceded her in death in 1994. Services will be at 11 a.m. today in Hawkins Funeral Chapel in Bridgeport. Burial will be in East Bridgeport Cemetery in Bridgeport. John was born Feb. 20, 1931, in Bridgeport. He graduated from Bridgeport High School in 1948 and served the United States in the Army Seventh Infantry Division during the Korean War. He attended North Texas State College, where he received his BS degree and earned his master's degree at West Texas State College in 1958. He married his college sweetheart, Jerry L. Hill, on Aug. 26, 1955, in Bridgeport, and had two children, Jay and Jane. Johnny began work at Southwestern Public Service Co. in November 1957 and retired from SPS U/E in June 1991, after serving 34 years as a PE mechanical engineer. John was an avid marathon runner and ran many marathons in many countries. He consistently won in his age group and was honored to carry the Olympic torch in 1984. He was instrumental in establishing Lone Star Running Club and was club president and the writer of the club's monthly newsletter. He was a regular at the YMCA and served on the downtown board of directors. After his retirement, John became an avid golfer. You could see him on Comanche Trail early every morning, with Jerry by his side. Survivors include his wife, Jerry L. Grill; a son, Jay Grill and wife Bee; a daughter, Jane Ierides and husband Lou; three grandchildren, Jason, Chris and Cassie Grill; a sister, Betty Evelyn Carlton and husband Tom; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St. Mrs. Sobers was born in Bartica, Guyana, South America, to Cecil Thomas and Ruby Stephanie Stephen. She moved to Stanleytown, W.D.B., to attend Full Gospel Fellowship Bible College for four years. There she met Malcolm Sobers, they were married on the 26th of April 1975. The union produced five children, daughters Melanie and Melissa, and sons Michael, Malcolm and David. She and Malcolm had been visiting in Amarillo since July. The family would like to acknowledge the multiple thousands of people who have been impacted by her life during the past 30 years of ministry. She was preceded in death by her parents; and 14 siblings. Survivors include her husband; five children; and her siblings, Dr. Claudette Stephen, the Rev. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery. Mrs. Dailey was born July 22, 1931, in Shamrock. She moved to Amarillo in 1937, and was a Texas Panhandle resident all of her life. Mrs. Dailey was active in Second Baptist Church and was a true believer in having a close walk with the Lord. She also loved animals. Mrs. Dailey was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and cousin, and will be missed by all who knew her. Survivors include a son, Troy D. Steel David M. Steel, 83, of Amarillo died Monday, Jan. 15, 2007. Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in Paramount Baptist Church with Dr. Gil Lain and Lance Herrington officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery by Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors Bell Avenue Chapel, 5400 S. Bell St. Mr. Steel was a member of Paramount Baptist Church. He married Betty Dominick in 1948 in Dalhart, and they lived in Waco, Dalhart, Dumas, Borger and Amarillo. They moved to Amarillo in 1989 due to her failing health. She died in 1991. He married Helen Taylor in 1994. Mr. Steel served 38 months in the U.S. Navy during World War II, spending 20 of those months in the South Pacific. He was in six major engagements. He graduated from Baylor University in 1950, and retired from Phillips Petroleum Co. in 1985. He was also preceded in death by a brother, John Steel of Greeley, Colo., in 2004. Survivors include his wife, Helen; four daughters, Cynthia Burke and husband Ron of Sugar Land, Carol Hennessee and husband Gary of Katy, Claudia Mezel and husband Gary of Amarillo and Candice Anderson and husband Richard of Waco; a son, David E. Steel and wife Janine of San Antonio and Bozeman, Mont.; two brothers, William Steel of Amarillo and Robert Steel of Corpus Christi; four stepchildren, Gwen Womack and Deby Gibson, both of Amarillo, Glen Taylor of Lubbock and Ronn Taylor of Tulia; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and seven stepgreat-grandchildren. Mrs. Davis was born Sept. 14, 1920, in Vernon. She was a member of Main Street Church of Christ and a volunteer at Runningwater Draw Care Center. Mr. Ebeling lived in Dimmitt most of his life. He was a veteran of the Navy. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Benjamin Seller, pastor officiating. Arrangements are by Morrison Funeral Directors. Ommie Ruth was born June 13, 1924, in Quinlan to Phelan and Hettie Bibby. She graduated from Quinlan school in 1941 as valedictorian of her class. In the summer of 1941 she graduated from East Texas State Teachers College, and that fall she was granted a teachers certificate. She taught school in Hunt and Van Zandt counties where she was teacher, superintendent, principal and janitor. On Sept. 3, 1943, she married L.V. Pete Mhoon in Greenville. In the fall of 1947 she started teaching in the Dumas school system, retiring in 1981. Ommie Ruth was a 51-year member of First Presbyterian Church and was active clerk of the session for seven years, elder and adult Sunday school teacher for many years. She was a lifetime member of the Texas State Teachers Association, National Educational Association and Retired Educators Association of Dumas. Survivors include her husband L.V. Pete Mhoon; a son, Larry Vaughn Mhoon and wife Sue of Lubbock; a brother, Merrell Bibby and wife Betty of Amarillo; two sisters, Marie Watson of Dumas and Clotene Pace and husband C.C. of Borger; three grandchildren, Kristi, Allison and Jonathan; and four great- grandchildren. Family graveside services will be Thursday in Friona Cemetery. Arrangements are by Blackwell Funeral Home. Mrs. Hand was born Feb. 7, 1921, in Sasakwa, Okla., to E.B. and Pearly Lee Brannon. She moved to Friona in 1929 from Sasakwa. She married Laurence R. Hand on Nov. 24, 1937, in Clovis, N.M. He died April 3, 1987. She was a homemaker and a faithful member of the Sixth Street Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by a great-grandson, Jacob Seth Hand, on June 2, 1983; and a son, Burke Hand, on Oct. 18, 2001. Survivors include a daughter, LeVada Bush of Duncanville; two sons, Mike Hand of Friona and Nick Hand of Dumas; a sister, Elthie Hand of Friona; 14 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. He farmed all his life in agriculture as well as being a dairy farmer for many years. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, a 75-year member of Catholic Order of Foresters, and served on the Nazareth school board and church council. He was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters. Survivors include his wife, Amy Schmucker; four sons, Dan Schmucker, Ray Schmucker and Jim Schmucker, all of Nazareth, and Gene Schmucker of Wichita Falls; three daughters, Bea Hoelting, Mary Ann Schulte and Janet Schmucker, all of Nazareth; a sister, Mary Gerber of Nazareth; 24 grandchildren; and 49 great-grandchildren. Alberta Lee Smith was born Nov. 20, 1917, in Fort Worth, Texas, to Florence Estelle Horner Morris and Stephen L. Morris and passed away Monday, Jan. 15, 2007, at Mangum City Hospital in Mangum, Okla., at the age of 89 years, one month and 26 days. She was married to George F. Smith on Dec. 18, 1938, in Fort Worth. They had lived in Fort Worth, Granite, Tulia, Texas, and Two Buttes, Colo., before retiring in Granite. She was a homemaker for her family as well as helping her husband in his work and was a member of Granite United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Smith; a brother, John Morris; and her parents, Steve and Florence Morris.
