King DUMAS - Joe R. "J.R." King, 84, died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2007. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Calvary Baptist Church with Brad Foster, pastor, officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Quitaque Cemetery in Quitaque by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors of Dumas. Mr. King was born June 10, 1922, in Gasoline to William and Nena King. Mr. King married Doris Owayne Duck in 1942 in Briscoe County. Joe was also a member of Calvary Baptist Church of Dumas. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Coast Guard. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Gary King and wife Sharon of Larskpur, Colo., and Jimmy King and wife Helen of Dumas; a daughter, Marilyn Hagar and husband Clifford of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a brother, Bill King of Colorado Springs; seven grandchildren, Michael, Jarrod, Shawna, Misty, Meghan, Janice and Heather; and eight great-grandchildren. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Richard Clyde Shepherd Jr. CHANNING - Richard Clyde Shepherd Jr., 79, died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2007, in Amarillo. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Channing Public School Gymnasium. Mr. Shepherd will then be laid to rest next to his wife in Channing Cemetery. Arrangements are by Horizon Funeral Home of Dalhart. Mr. Shepherd attended school at Buffalo Flats and later served two years in the U.S. Army. While working on the JA Ranch near Clarendon, Clyde met Beverly Ruth O'Neal. They were married Sept. 18, 1954. A lifelong cowboy and rancher, many of the ranches Clyde made tracks on include the Upper and Lower Matador, Rentfro, Burson, JA, SJ, McCarty and McCloy. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Beverly; a premature son; his parents; and a brother, Phillip "Red" Shepherd. He will be greatly missed by his two daughters, Linda Preston and Cindi Cates of Channing, their husbands, Dennis and Don; three grandchildren, Hayden, Kelly and Layce; two great-grandchildren, Keegan and Everlee; a brother, Frank Shepherd of Channing; and two sisters, Sue Cunningham of Hartley and Jean Cates of Amarillo. Mr. Curtis was born Nov. 9, 1949, in Waurika, Okla., to Mrs. Yolanda Dean Curtis Kelley and the late Mr. J.W. Curtis II. He attended grammar school in Electra and graduated from Canadian High School in 1968. He then attended Southern Nazarene College in Bethany, Okla., and Central Oklahoma State in Edmond, Okla. He later got his Real Estate license from Amarillo College. He married Jeanne Jahnel on Dec. 26, 1992, in Canadian. He was the owner of Curtis Construction. He served on the Canadian City Council and was a longtime member and past president of the Canadian Lions Club. Johnny was a member of First Baptist Church, where he served as deacon, member of the choir and was a Sunday school teacher for the 4th, 5th and 6th grade boys. There are no known survivors. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sterling Randle Allsup Sterling Randle Allsup, 85, of Amarillo died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2007. Coulter St. Mr. Allsup was born April 14, 1921, in Bryans Mill to Sterling Alfred Allsup and Rothie Patterson Allsup. He was one of 11 children born to the couple. Sterling married Hazel Marie Buck on Oct. 21, 1942, in San Diego just after entering the U.S. Marine Corps. He spent almost three years in the Pacific Theater, transforming him from a farm boy into the man he became. He was trained as a watch repairman after World War II, but was employed by the Helium Plant of Amarillo for 30 years as a dock superintendent. Utilizing his watch repair knowledge after retirement, he began working on antique clocks and eventually became a certified horologist and clock collector. He was married for 62 years and had a life replete with trials and tribulations, joys and heartaches. Always the Marine, however, he withstood it all and managed to inculcate two sons and numerous co-workers to his rigid work ethics and tenacious spirit to do the best you can at whatever you do. This was most obvious in his love of clock repair and his agonizing over making a 200-year-old clock run like new. His wisdom, love and his wry sense of humor will be greatly missed, but his influence will continue to impact his only remaining son, his granddaughter, and his two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; four sisters; his wife; and a son Randle "Pasha" Allsup. Survivors include a son, Rick Allsup and wife Jerry of Amarillo; two sisters, Nadine Crowder of El Paso and Mary Lou Clark of Lubbock; two brothers, Glenn Allsup of Lubbock and Bobby Allsup of El Paso; a granddaughter, Ashley Lee and husband Scott of Amarillo; and two great-grandchildren, Savannah and Kara Lee of Amarillo. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tom Townsend Tom Townsend, 82, of Amarillo died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2007. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery. Mr. Townsend was born June 30, 1924, in Clemenceau, Ariz., to Frederick William Townsend and Bessie Garlington Townsend. He worked for many years at the Navajo Helium Plant in Shiprock, N.M., then in 1968, he was transferred to the Xcel Helium Plant at Masterson. Mr. Townsend served with the U.S. Navy during World War II at Espiritu Santo in the New Hebrides Islands off the coast of Australia. He married Marea Gehbauer on Nov. 27, 1947, in Gallup, N.M. Survivors include his wife; four daughters, Deborah Higgins and husband Mike and Lea Podzemny and husband Richard, all of Amarillo, Pam Coulter and husband Ron of Texline and Hazel Wohlfahrt and husband Erhardt of Germany; a son, Bill Townsend and wife Val of Amarillo; a daughter-in-law, Allyne Townsend of Amarillo; 10 grandchildren, Mandi Guffey, Jodi and Jeff Coulter, Fritz, Mark and Denise Wohlfahrt, Angie Telford and husband Bret, Micha Higgins and Tommy and Georgie Virga; and a great grandchild, Keely Telford. Phu Phan officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery. Mr. Williams was born Jan. 18, 1947, to Deward Preston Williams and Neola Ardis Williams. He served in the U.S. Army in Korea during the Vietnam War. Mr. Williams married the love of his life, Janice Britten of Groom, on Oct. 24, 1970, in Groom. He faithfully served with the Knights of Columbus. He was a Fourth Degree Knight and served as a field agent for the Knights of Columbus for 14 years. At the time of his death, he worked as the manager of Morgan Buildings and Spas. When time permitted, he enjoyed camping, fishing and the occasional game of golf with his sons. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Thomas Ray, in 1979; and a sister, Mae Timmins. Dr. Witcher was born Sept. 6, 1916, in Duke, Jackson County, Okla., to Grover Cleveland Witcher and Willene Carey Jones Witcher. He graduated from Mangum High School and the University of Oklahoma. He graduated from the University of Oklahoma Medical School in 1943. He completed his residency at John Gaston Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. He then served in the Army as a captain in the medical corps. Dr. Witcher came to Amarillo and opened his practice as an ear, nose and throat surgeon in 1949. He married Geraldine "Jerry" Freeman on June 24, 1939, in El Reno, Okla. He was preceded in death by his wife on Aug. 9, 2004, and a great-grandson, Chance Allen Witcher. Mrs. Warren was born Ruth Lorraine Coan on June 16, 1919, in Creston, Iowa, to Frank and Ollie Coan. She had a brother, Eugene Coan, and two sisters, Wanda Long and Dorothy Watkins. She moved to Amarillo with her family in 1926 and graduated from Amarillo High in 1937. Ruth later met and married Max Warren while working at the Amarillo Air Force Base. They raised two sons together, and in 1962, they moved to California where their sons attended college. Mr. Warren passed away in 1984. In 2005, Ruth moved back to Amarillo with her son, Max and daughter-in-law, Barbara. The family would like to give special thanks to the people who cared for Ruth at Seville Estates and Vista Care Hospice.
