"Okie" McAtee PANHANDLE - Larry E. "Okie" McAtee, 75, died Sunday, Feb. 11, 2007, in Amarillo. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Panhandle First Christian Church with the Rev. Shayne Raulston and the Rev. David Theel of Borger officiating. Burial will follow in Panhandle Cemetery by Minton/Chatwell Funeral Directors of Panhandle. Mr. McAtee was born July 6, 1931, in Carter, Okla., and had been a Panhandle resident for 58 years. He married Ardell Stephens on May 15, 1955, in Colchester, Ill. He was retired from Pantex after 40 years in assembly. He served in the US Army during the Korean War. He loved serving the Lord, his family, and talking with people about fishing and hunting. He was also a horticulturist. He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Nola McAtee; and a sister, Betty Embry. Survivors include his wife, Ardel McAtee; a son, David McAtee and wife Kim of Midland; three daughters, Diana Perley and husband Howard of Amarillo, Cynthia Ackerman and husband Peter of Portage, Mich. and Cathy Whitt of Panhandle; a brother, Jack McAtee and wife Lanora of Greeley, Colo.; two sisters, Sue Parker and husband Dale of Blackwell and Ann Loftiss of Cordell, Okla.; and seven grandchildren, Adam Ackerman, Alex Ackerman, Jacob McAtee, Tabitha Whitt, Austin Whitt, Elizabeth McAtee and Zach Guillot. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Nancy L. "Jiggs" Lowe MEMPHIS - G.D. "Jiggs" Lowe, 83, died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2007, in Vici, Okla. Services will be at 10 a.m. today in Hughs Memorial Chapel with Tom Anderson officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery. Mr. Lowe was born May 16, 1923 in the Plaska Lodge area to the late Mr. J.H. Lowe and Mrs. Florence Birdwell Lowe. He lived in Lakeview for many years before moving to Memphis. Jiggs was a WW II veteran and served overseas in Japan. He was a member of the VFW in Memphis and farmed in the Lakeview area until his retirement. Jiggs was a member of the Church of Christ. He resided in the Vici Nursing Home for the past year. He was also preceded in death by a son, Rickey Don Lowe, on March 12, 1992; a grandson, John Wayne Lowe on Nov. 30, 2000; a brother, Fred; and four sisters, Monnie Grant, Blanch Lowe, Mary Gordon and Wanda Robertson. Arrangements are by Horizon Funeral Home. Mr. Keel was born Sept. 12, 1958, in Dalhart to Billy L. and Shirley C. Turner Keel. Raised in Dalhart, Billy graduated from Dalhart High school in 1977 and then attended West Texas State University, where he received his BA. He was district manager for Otis Spunkmeyer, Inc. in Denver and Phoenix before moving to Florida in 2004 to become territorial manager for the Keebler Company in Sarasota, Fla. - Billy's work ethic kept him very busy but he was still an avid golfer. He was preceded in death by his mother. Mrs. Powers was born to John and Jessie Green on July 26, 1919, in Pittsburg and had lived in Amarillo most of her life. She was interested in family genealogy and gardening. She was also in the D.A.R. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sydney Powers, Jr.; a daughter, Peggy Marie Wiley; a grandson, Stanley A. Wiley; and a brother, Earl Green. Hughes, 87, of Amarillo died Sunday, Feb. 11, 2007. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery. Johnny was born May 1, 1919, in Hot Springs, Ark., to Green Jackson and Bertha Smith Hughes. He married Margaret Cook in 1938 in Sayre, Okla. He lost his beloved wife of 68 years and the love of his life on Sept. 26, 2006. They were partners in every aspect of their life. They designed and constructed many beautiful homes in Dumas, Amarillo and the surrounding areas as co-partners and owners of Hughes Construction Quality Built Homes for 40 years. When Margaret was a member of the Dumas Garden Club, Johnny worked side by side with her in her various gardening projects. They were longtime members of the Bible Baptist Church in Dumas. They lived in Dumas since 1942 and moved to Amarillo in 1994. He was preceded in death by his parents; two infant siblings; two brothers, General Hughes and Claude Hughes; and three sisters, Fadelle Markley, Estelle Price and AnnaLee Prince. Burial will be in Llano East Cemetery by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St. Mr. Cale was born on April 8, 1931, in Wichita, Kan., to Herbert William Cale and Hilda Irene Plant. He served in the U.S. Navy in Guam, the Philippines and Japan from 1950 to 1954. After his discharge, Mr. Cale attended the University of Wichita in Kansas where, in 1960, he obtained a bachelor of fine arts degree cum laude, majoring in drawing and painting. During this time, he and fellow artists established Bottega Gallery, a studio and salon widely acknowledged as an incubator for major Kansas visual artists working in the modern style. From 1962 through 1965, he attended Wichita State University, earning a master of fine arts degree in painting and printmaking. Mr. Cale was employed as an illustrator at Boeing Aircraft and served as acting director of the Art Division at the Institute of Logopedics. The school served autistic and special needs students and is now known as Heartspring School. Mr. Cale married Gertrude Jen Shunatona in 1961, and in 1965 moved his young family to Amarillo, where he enjoyed a long and fulfilling career as a professor of art at Amarillo College teaching painting, two-dimensional design and drawing. For several years, Cale was a member of Colony Katherine, an artist's collective that produced works from a studio perched on the rim of Palo Duro Canyon. He developed a life-long admiration for the raw and beautiful High Plains landscape, producing a series of canyon-inspired drawings and watercolors created during numerous hikes and day-trips. Cale, with his wife Jen, who passed away Dec. 5, 2006, started the Native American association "N.A.B.C.A.P.S." and served as "High Sycamore" for the groups high-spirited meetings. After his retirement from A.C. in 1993, he challenged himself to rediscover and refine many of the techniques he enjoyed passing on to his students over the 28 years of his teaching career. Cale's works have been shown in galleries around the world and have become part of numerous public and private collections, including The Permanent Print and Drawing Collection at the Victoria and Albert Museum (London), The Royal Collection, (Buckingham Palace), The School of Art at the University of Manitoba (Canada), the David E. and Vivian Bernard Collection, The Wichita Museum of Art, The Little Rock Art Association, Wichita State University, Amarillo College, The University of Minnesota at Morris and Western New Mexico University at Silver City, among others. Survivors include a brother, Roger Cale of Fontana, Calif.; two daughters, Kateri Cale of Dallas and Jen Renee Cale of Amarillo; a son, Charles Cale of Austin; and three grandsons, Travis, Cale and Bennett of Amarillo.
