He was in the first graduating class of Cooper High School in 1962 and went on to attend Texas A&M University. He married his high school sweetheart, Susan Lee Smith, in April 1965. Their marriage of 22 years produced his only children, Traci, Whitney and Lee. Chapy was a Master Mason and lifetime member of the San Angelo Concho Masonic Lodge. After Susan's untimely death in 1989, Chapy's home in Dallas was a refuge for their children. His unconditional love and strength of character helped them carry the weight of their collective loss forward. In 1990 he began a relationship with Margie Read, a native of Canyon. Five years later they were married. Their love of travel, pets and family made for a natural place for his pain to subside and their love to grow. Chapy had two careers in his life, the first in the restaurant industry where he honed his leadership skills and was a lead engineer in building several successful enterprises that are still in existence today. During this time he established lifelong friendships that survived the temporary nature of the business. His second career was in law enforcement and began in mid-1990 in New Braunfels. In 1998, he and Margie moved to Canyon, where he joined the Randall County Sheriff's Department. His expertise in organization and management was instrumental in the transition to the new Randall County Jail and in the development of the policies and procedures in use today. He quickly made friends with his new co-workers and rose to rank of lieutenant. He loved his work at the jail and being a part of that exceptional community. He was a friend to all, inmate and employee alike. Success followed in every aspect of his life, as husband, father, grandfather, friend, mentor, employee or manager. His words of wisdom helped shape those who sought his advice and his unconditional love drew those in need toward him. With gentleness and humor, his words could help transform any situation from dark to light. The family would like to express their deep thanks to the people of the Randall County Sheriff's Department and the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum for their exceptional love and care for Chapy and his family during this difficult journey.
