Flippin, 88, of Amarillo died Thursday, March 15, 2007, in Georgetown. Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors Bell Avenue Chapel, 5400 S. Bell St. A.G. Flippin was born May 8, 1918, in Wilson, Okla. He was the oldest son of W.H. and Clara Flippin. He passed away on March 15, 2007, in Georgetown. During his life, his careers included participation in the Civilian Conservation Corps during the 1930s, working as an aircraft mechanic during World War II and taking up plumbing in the 1950s. He was proudest of being a farmer and a cattle rancher, a career that spanned the last 40 years of working life. He lived life to the fullest, making the best use of his talents and expecting others to do the same. In addition, he loved to make jokes and had a grand sense of humor. He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Willie Mae Flippin; two brothers, Jack and James Marnell; and four sisters, Willie Mae Mann, Florence Freiley, Syble Milson and Billene Freeman. Survivors include two children, Wanda O'Connor of Round Rock and Arvil Flippin Jr. of Edmond, Okla.; eight grandchildren, Carol, David, Tommy, Mark, Todd, Traci, Kim and Angela; 14 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; four brothers Harold, Ray, Bob and Gene Flippin; a sister, Hazel Morton; and numerous nieces and nephews. She lived in Coleman, Sioux Falls, S.D., Plainview, Dallas and Coronado, Calif., before moving to Amarillo for the last 59 years. After graduating from high school, Mrs. Finney continued her education at Texas Woman's University in Denton. She married the love of her life, Ernest Finney on Nov. 27, 1943, in Denton and together they celebrated 63 years of marriage. They enjoyed traveling, going dancing and family time. She was a homemaker and a member of Chapter CM, P.E.O. Mrs. Finney was a member of First Presbyterian Church. Kitty was loved by her family and friends and will always be remembered for her love of life and family, her genuine and giving spirit and her compassion for others, She was preceded in death by her husband on Dec. 5, 2006. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd. Viola, or Vi as she liked to be called, was born in Dumas on Aug. 1, 1923, to Etha and George Ham. She grew up in Dumas and at the age of 15 became a rodeo queen and Miss Moore County. After marrying and traveling to post-World War II Germany, she became fluent in the language and assisted several families in adopting war orphans. While in Kaiserslautern, Germany, she became president of the Red Cross Gray Ladies and president of the NCO Wife's Club. Upon returning to the United States, Vi and husband Delbert J. White lived in Amarillo for a time and then moved to Colorado Springs, Colo., where they were owners of a jewelry store. They retired to Amarillo and became members of Southwest Church of Christ. Always keeping busy, she sewed children's clothes and donated them to the Church of Christ's home for children. Not only was she beautiful on the outside, she was beautiful on the inside, always a giving, caring wife, mother, sister and friend. She was preceded in death by her husband. Survivors include three daughters, Sue Cardinal and husband Lonnie of Hereford, Mary Ann Fruits of Albuquerque, N.M., and Sidney J. Hamer and husband Robert of Amarillo; a son, Johnny D. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St. Mrs. Hyde was born March 6, 1934, in New York City to Benjamin and Rebecca Steinberg. She graduated from Brooklyn College with a bachelor of arts in psychology (with honors) in 1981. She was a resident of New York City until 1987, when she and her husband, Scott Hyde, relocated to Amarillo after she had suffered a severe stroke in 1985 that made big city life difficult. She held administrative positions at State University of New York - Downstate Medical Center, Brooklyn, N.Y.; Kings County Hospital Department of Psychiatry; and The Rockefeller University, a graduate-level medical research center in New York City from 1972 to 1987. Mrs. Hyde was a talented writer and worked on several special projects in the late 1980s and early 1990s with Gerald Kelly, then chaplain at Harrington Cancer Center, including a special report on Chaplain Kelly for the Globe- News, and a guest editorial on non-handicapped drivers who park in designated handicapped parking spaces. Beginning in 1988, she was a member, and then president, of the Amarillo Stroke Survivors Club until about 2002. Helping other stroke survivors was a commitment she made after receiving what she considered inadequate support for her stroke recovery. Survivors include her husband and three children from a previous marriage; a son, Steven Miller, lawyer, of St. Louis; a son, Michael Miller, a psychiatrist of San Antonio; and a daughter, Ellen Miller of New York City; and two grandchildren. Services will be held at a later date in Washington, where Doug spent most of his life residing. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St. It is with great sadness that the family of Elroy Douglas Hansch announces his passing after a courageous battle with cancer on Tuesday, March 6, 2007, in Amarillo at the age of 57 years. Doug was born April 9, 1949, in Portland, Ore., to the late Douglas Frye and Lorraine Slaby. He served in the U.S. Navy during Vietnam and was stationed in San Diego. On July 16, 1979, he was united in marriage with Barbara A. Unkrur in Tacoma, Wash. Doug and Barbara went on to own multiple businesses around the Seattle/Tacoma area. In 2002, the family moved to Amarillo, where Doug found his calling helping children. In 2004, Doug helped to form the non-profit organization, Seven Star Horse and Family Center, a program for special needs and challenged children. Doug served as executive director and was significant in making the organization an important part of many families' lives. Making a child smile and laugh is what Doug treasured the most. He will forever be remembered as a loving husband and father. Survivors include his wife of 27 years, Barbara, and a daughter, Kimberly. Mr. Sparks taught band and music in public schools throughout the Texas Panhandle. He was an accomplished musician, singer and songwriter. He was well known in West Texas for his contribution to music. Mr. Sparks married Shelley in November 1993. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He grew up in Eau Claire, Wis., and attended Eau Clare High School. He continued his education at Texas Tech in Lubbock. His education was interrupted by military service from January 1943 to August 1945. He served in the U.S. Army as first lieutenant in the 989th Treadway Bridge Company. Upon returning, he completed his education and graduated from Texas Tech in 1946 with a bachelor of science in electrical engineering. He worked for Southwestern Public Service Co. from 1948 until his retirement in 1984. During this period, for many years, he served as chairman of the board of Public Service Employees Credit Union, now known as Access Credit Union. He was a registered professional engineer, a member of the Texas Society of Professional Engineers (TSPE) and past president of the local chapter of the TSPE. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy F. Serrurier; two sons, Richard A. Serrurier and wife Linda and Donald W. Mr. Gibson was born March 13, 1928, in Weslaco to Clifford and Lillie Gibson. He graduated from Dimmitt High School in 1946 and also attended Texas Tech University. He farmed in Hart and later moved to Amarillo in 1951. He was a professional painter and served the painters union as business representative for three years and retired as a union painter. John was a trustee at Washington Avenue Christian Church for many years and was a member of the Thee Fellowship Class. He loved to travel, play dominoes, was an avid pool player and loved piano music. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Delores Floyd. Survivors include a daughter, Karen L. Mr. Kelso was born May 6, 1934, in Anson to Lee and Gladis Hendrix Kelso. He was a U.S. Army veteran. Pat did his undergraduate studies at North Texas and received his master's and Ph.D. in economics at the University of Texas in Austin. He married Mary Margaret Robie on Aug. 24, 1964, in Austin. Pat was a professor of economics at West Texas A&M retiring in 1999 after 31 years of employment. He was studying for the priesthood and was ordained as a deacon in the Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Northwest Texas on Sept. 30, 2006. He was a member of St. George's Episcopal Church and Student Center. Kenneth Ray Austin was born Nov. 28, 1948, in Dalhart to Raymond and Daphne Walkup Austin. Kenneth was a 1967 graduate of Dalhart High School. A farmer and rancher, he lived his entire life in the Dalhart area and was active in the community from high school, where he was class president and received the Fighting Heart Award, to exalted ruler of the B.P.O.E. 2390 (Elks), past XIT Director and past president of the XIT Rangers. He also served on the FHA Financial Board. Brown, 86, died Wednesday, March 14, 2007, in Lubbock. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in First United Methodist Church in Dumas with the Rev. Beth Harrington, pastor of the church, officiating. Burial will be in Dumas Cemetery with flag detail by American Legion Post 224 of Dumas. Arrangements are by Morrison Funeral Directors. George Ansen Brown was born July 20, 1920, to Alice and Calvin Brown, a Moore County pioneer ranching family. His grandfather, W.H. Brown, homesteaded on four school sections, six miles east and three miles north of Four-Way, in 1890, which was two years before Moore County was established as a county in the state of Texas. George attended Sunray public schools from 1927 through 1933 and then finished his education at Dumas High School, graduating in 1939. In 1942 he enlisted in the U.S. Army in the Horse Cavalry. After a year in the cavalry, he transferred to the Re-Mount Division where he served for four years. George spent two years in Burma, India, packing horses and mules up the Burma Road to the infantry units. He was honorably discharged in March 1946. Upon returning home, George began his cattle and quarter horse business at the original homestead location. He served 30 years on the board of directors of the Golden Spread Quarter Horse Association and served as its president. Upon resigning from the board of directors, he was awarded an Honorary Lifetime Membership and honored by the organization for his years of service and dedication. He also served on the XIT Quarter Horse Board of Directors and served as its president. On May 30, 1947, he married Fay Childers, who preceded him in death on Sept. 2, 1992. In the mid-1950s, Martin Gossett asked George to supervise and direct the Brucellosis Program for Moore County, where he contacted the area ranches to draw blood and check every cow in the county for this disease. George was also asked to supervise and direct the Screw-Worm Eradication Program, which was a county, state and national program and expenditure. He contacted every rancher in the county for donations to assist in this program and eradication. George Brown was an approved American Quarter Horse Judge for 16 years. He judged shows from California to Florida and from Wisconsin to Arkansas. He was unable to continue his judging after falling 12 feet from one of his haystacks on the ranch, breaking his hip. George was always considered an impartial and fair judge by the participants, the horse owners and the show sponsors. In 1960, George was elected Moore County Commissioner, representing Precinct 3 and served on the Commissioners Court for 16 years. He also served as the interim county judge when needed. While serving on the Commissioners Court the four commissioners completely renovated the Moore County Courthouse, built the current community building and the new rodeo grounds and secured the right-of- way to Lake Meredith and Plum Creek. He was also responsible for building 34 miles of blacktop roads within Precinct 3, which had no blacktop roads before he began as commissioner. George served as a Moore County 4-H leader for 46 years. He served on the Moore County Fair Board for eight years, with two terms as president. He was recognized as Rancher of the Year by the Tri-State Fair in 2003 and received his Honorary FFA Lone Star Degree in 2005. George had been a member of First United Methodist Church in Dumas since 1937, by his own choice. He also attended Middlewell Community Church and Channing United Methodist Church while his wife, Fay Brown, was serving as pastor. Survivors include two daughters, Georgenia Anne VanTuyl and husband Ronald of Tulsa, Okla., and Janice Fay Pond and husband Kevin of Lubbock.; and four grandchildren, Moreland Brown Sherrod of Tulsa and Ansen Roy Pond, Kendra Louise Pond and Nathan Wilson Pond, all of Lubbock. Services will be at 3 p.m. today in First United Methodist Church in Spearman with the Rev. Neely Landrum officiating. Burial will be in Ochiltree Cemetery in Perryton by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman. Mr. Cudd was born Aug. 28, 1921, in Ochiltree County to India Mattie Belle Jackson and Jesse E. Cudd. In 1942, he married Frances Sheets. They lived for 28 years on a farm near Perryton before moving to Spearman in 1971, where he lived until his death. At the age of 18, Mr. Cudd started his career in the farm equipment business with the John Deere dealership in Booker. He continued his career at Perryton Implement Co., beginning as a mechanic and advancing to salesman with part ownership. In 1953, he founded Hansford Implement Co. in the former location of Womble Hardware in Spearman. The business expanded to its current location in Spearman with branches in Pampa, Perryton and Dumas. During his career, Mr. Cudd was recognized by Deere and Co. numerous times as a Signature Dealer for his outstanding level of performance and customer service. His honesty, work ethic and dedication to his employees and customers will be his legacy in the business. As an active supporter of his community, Mr. Cudd served as president of the Spearman Chamber of Commerce, the Chamber Ambassadors, the Hansford County Shrine Club and the Southwest Association of Farm Equipment Dealers. He also served as a Spearman city councilman, director of the Yucca Council of Girl Scouts, charter sponsor of Boy Scouts, director of the National Agricultural Equipment Dealers Association and was a founding director of First National Bank of Spearman. A loyal supporter of both the Ochiltree and Hansford County livestock shows, Mr. Cudd also was a 50-year Mason, a longtime Rotarian an active member of the United Methodist Church and a former member of the Golden Spread Senior Citizens Association Board. An avid fan of Texas Tech University and a scholarship donor to the Red Raider Club, Mr. Cudd enjoyed attending both Red Raider and Lady Raider events with his wife, Frances. He will always be remembered by his family as a loving and giving father and grandfather.
