Private memorial services were in Houston and in Central Park in New York City.?Other memorial services will be in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, and Antigua, Guatemala. Mary Sue Gibson Morris died on?March 17, 2007, St Patrick's Day, at the home of friends Mark and Carol Glasser of Houston.?Mary Sue was in the care of M.D. Anderson Hospital and Houston Hospice for breast cancer. Mrs. Morris was born Oct. 5, 1938 to W.W. "Duck" and Ruth Gibson. She graduated in 1956 from Amarillo High School in Amarillo, attended the University of Oklahoma and graduated with a B.B.A. in 1960 from Southern Methodist University, a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority. Mary Sue traveled abroad "first class" in 1963. She returned to Dallas joining the Haggar Co. in public relations. Three years later, she began an around- the-world adventure, this time on a shoestring, spending a year in Paris and hitchhiking, cycling, and flying across Europe and Asia. (When Thomas Thompson's book "Serpentine" came out in 1979, it was clear that Mary Sue missed being a victim of serial killer Charles Sobhraj "there but for the grace of God," for they certainly could have crossed paths. Sobhraj preyed on beautiful female travelers such as Mary Sue.) In 1968, she settled in New York City and became manager of women's services for American Airlines. In 1973, she moved to Cincinnati, where she transformed an historic bank building into a boutique mall, complete with jewelry vault and restaurant. In 1980, she returned to Manhattan restoring, enhancing, renting, selling and virtually re- inventing the co-op real estate market. In 1988, she sold her business and "retired," again circling the globe. This time she ended her journey in Guatemala. "Posada del Angel," the inn she designed and built in the historic city of Antigua, became a favored retreat of presidents, pundits and media personalities from all over the world. She also found an excuse for frequent travels around the world, buying native art and hand-made jewelry for her shop "Joyeria del Angel." This gave her such pleasure that she recreated her success in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, with "Viva"- a shop notable for its unique jewelry, chic handbags and trendy shoes. Just months before her death, she traveled once more around the world, choosing one-of-a-kind jewelry items for her Latin American shops. Ever the entrepreneur, Mary Sue was exploring Houston real estate up to her last days. Those of us closest to Mary Sue - and hundreds of us thought we were - realize that no one of us ever knew all there was to Mary Sue. She gave her attention to "you," and seldom told her own story except as it pertained to "you." Thus, none of us has the same wonderful picture and experience of Mary Sue Gibson Morris. We all agree that she had energy, stamina, imagination and cheer in abundance. She was curious and involved with people in all walks of life, even though she was at home in the circles of important people of many nations. To quote one friend, "Mary Sue Morris was a force of nature." As such, she remains in our hearts forever. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Michael. Survivors include a sister-in-law, Nancy Gibson of Whitney; cousin John V. Cline of Houston; and devoted friends all over the world, especially those who were so strong in Mary Sue's last months: Carol and Mark Glasser of Houston, Ronny Weaver of Dallas, Nancy Gibson of Whitney and Ivonne Anzueto - Mary Sue's Guatemalan manager.
