Memorial celebration of life services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Johnny Robertson officiating. Arrangements are by Johnson Funeral Home. Walter Lockhoof, former Mayor (five years), Mayor Pro Tem (three years) and City Councilman (12 years) of Childress, died of natural causes at his home Saturday evening, April 28. His body will be donated to Texas Tech Medical Center. Giving of oneself to science and research so that others may live in health were the belief of Walter and his late wife, Darlien. Walter was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 53 years, Darlein, whom he met in 1943 while training pilots for World War II at the Childress Army Air Field. Walter was born April 26, 1922, the son of Walter and "Ma" Lockhoof, and grew up in Sacramento, Calif. His two sisters, Babe Craig (Mrs. Walter Craig) of Sacramento, and Dorothy Perry of Roseville (and husband Ken Perry who resides in a veterans hospital) still reside in California. Walter, Darlein and son Reed drove many miles through the years to visit their California family. Later Walter, Darlein and grandson Flip flew those same miles to visit. They were all very close, particularly to Babe's four sons and families: Richard and Shirley Craig, Bobby and Sandy Craig, Gary and Joan Craig and Gregory and Vickie Craig. Walter and grandson Flip and nephews Gary and Gregory even caught some waves and lost a wallet in the process of rafting in the Pacific Ocean one summer. There are numerous nieces, nephews and "grands" still residing in California as well. Walter and Darlein were blessed with one son, Walter Reed Lockhoof, assistant attorney general of Texas, and one grandson, Flip, an engineer with Cirrus Semiconductor. Both were very special and very close to Walter. Reed and Flip reside in Austin along with their wives, Nancy and Michelle. Walter was also blessed with one great-granddaughter, Taylor, and one great-grandson, Shane Lockhoof. They were the apples of his eye, and they loved their "Daddoo." Walter was the manager for the Watkins Department Store for more than 40 years, and during that time he helped many Childress students obtain scholarships at state and national universities and appointments to military academies as well. Upon his retirement from Watkins in 1991, Rep. Warren Chisum drafted a resolution whereby the Texas House of Representatives recognized Walter for his many years of exemplary service and his extraordinary achievements on behalf of others and congratulated him on his retirement. Walter was a visionary and "doer" for Childress. His goal was always to stimulate the lifeblood of Childress and rural areas of the state. Congressman Jack Hightower recognized this trait and asked President Carter to appoint him the U.S. Advisory Council on Rural Development. Gov. Ann Richards later appointed him to the Texas Rural Economic Advisory Board. He was instrumental in putting the wheels in motion for obtaining grant monies from the Texas parks and Wildlife for the revitalization and improvements to the fair park area. He then worked with the museum board and the Lions Club for additional park improvements and expansion into the transportation area with the 501 train engine display and the play area which the Lions Club continues to maintain. Walter's visionary wheels were always turning and working for Childress. In the late '70s his son mentioned a federal lawsuit involving the state prison system. Walter started thinking and working on getting a prison unit located in Childress for jobs and other economic development. As mayor, Walter wrote a letter to W.J. Estelle, executive director of the Texas prison system, requesting that Childress be considered for a prison unit. Estelle responded to Walter saying that Walter was the first Texas mayor to request that a prison unit be built in their city or county. Director Estelle promised Walter that when the prison units were built Childress would definitely be near the top of the line to receive a prison unit. From that day on Walter burned up the pavement between Childress and Austin, meeting with Rep. Whaley and later Rep. Warren Chisum and State Sen. Steve Carriker. This was long before anyone or any city or county in the state even thought about regional prisons. Now those prison units provide jobs and economic stimulation for Childress and throughout Texas. In the early '90s, Childress paid him the ultimate compliment and recognized him as the "Man of the Year" for his longtime civic contributions to the city of Childress. Walter was a great man. The family suggests memorials be to Fair Park and Museum, Childress Chamber of Commerce, 237 Commerce St., P.O. Box 35, Childress, TX 79201. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. There will be a social in the fellowship hall immediately after the services Saturday.
