Leota was born April 18, 1918, to Ed and Bessie Wells on the family homestead in northeast Moore County. She grew up on the Wells' family farm in a loving, hard-working family with her siblings, Bertie Wells Murphy, Iris Wells Wherry, Gaston "Buck" Wells and Lillian Wells Harrison. For their elementary education, all of the Wells children attended the Palo Duro school, about two miles from the Wells' home, and all the Wells children rode horseback to the elementary school. After finishing the eighth grade at Palo Duro, Leota attended high school in Dumas and lived with Bertie Murphy and the George Murphy family. After graduating from high school, she worked as a secretary-bookkeeper for the local Ford dealership, the American Zinc Co. and Dumas Butane, where she worked until retirement. Leota was a loving, compassionate daughter, sister and aunt and she maintained those attributes throughout her life. She enjoyed reading, playing bridge and other games, embroidering, crocheting and cooking. Mrs. Denton was born Oct. 13, 1920, in Zincville, Okla. She was raised in Baxter Springs, Kan. She married Ralph Denton in 1945. In their early life they enjoyed ministry and pastoral work. Mrs. Denton was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a member of Trinity Fellowship Church. She had been working as an immigration counselor for Catholic Family Service. She was a loving mother, and always gave everyone a fair chance. She contracted polio at a very young age and went through many surgeries, but she never looked at herself as being handicapped and it never stopped her from doing the things she loved to do. She was a fun person to be with and will be dearly missed. Survivors include a son, Pedro S. He returned to Amarillo in 2005 after living in Springdale, Ark., a few years. He was a huge Chicago Cubs fan and loved playing golf. He never missed an OU football game and enjoyed watching all college football. He enjoyed working in the flower garden and loved to cook-out with his family and friends. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Renee Dugas, in April 2006.
