George Nichols May, 96, an Ann Arbor resident for 60 years, passed away peacefully at Sunrise of Ann Arbor on April 28, 2007, in the company of family. George was born in 1910 in Marshfield, Vt., one of six children of George E. and Josephine Martha Nichols May. The family moved to California for several years before settling in Amarillo, Texas. At age 14, George had a copyboy job with the Amarillo Globe-News that caught his interest. George was in the 1927 inaugural class of Amarillo (Junior) College and chose journalism as his field. He was the first city editor of the Amarillo Times. His reporting focus was the automotive industry but he also found time to pursue a love of flying and obtained his private pilot's license during the Depression. He served in World War II as an Army Air Corps flight instructor, a hazardous assignment with fatality rates matching those of active combat squadrons. At war's end he felt opportunities were best for automotive writers in the Detroit area and moved to Michigan. In 1949 he met and married Barbara Marie Raynor, then a graduate student in library science at U. of Michigan. They raised two sons, Michael and Robert, in Ann Arbor, providing the boys with love, guidance and the best possible educations. George initially worked for the former Kaiser-Fraser automobile company, and then joined the advertising agency of Kenyon & Eckhardt in Detroit, working until retirement. He was involved in promoting the Lincoln- Mercury Division of Ford Motor Co. One of his promotional campaigns was the genesis of the "Ford has a better idea" slogan that continues to this day. When Lee Iaccoca took over the struggling Chrysler Corp., the Ford and Chrysler ad accounts flip-flopped clients on short notice, and George set to work learning the new client's needs with great enthusiasm. He provided technical writing and assistance for Mr. Iaccoca's highly touted TV ads showing the "boss" on the factory floor, exhorting Americans to buy new Chrysler products. George retired to Crestland Drive in Ann Arbor, serving as "honorary granddad" to a covey of neighborhood children living near Pattengill Elementary School. He lived independently and happily until late 2006, and then took up residence at Sunrise Senior Living of Ann Arbor, where he found wonderful support and friendship. George was a life member of American Legion Post 46. He was also a former member of the parents advisory board of Culver Military Academy, where his sons attended high school. The family wishes to thank the staff and care managers at Sunrise, and the nurses and staff of Odyssey Hospice Care for their exemplary compassion and skill. George's life was also greatly influenced by the kindness and help provided by his "angel network" of friends and neighbors in the Carhart/Crestland/Hall Avenue neighborhood. These generous souls wove a priceless tapestry of support and love that embraced George and brought him an extraordinary quality of life over the past decades. He was preceded in death by sisters, Ellen May Jones and Geraldine May Kalokowski; and a brother, Herbert May. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Joie (Nunez) of Reno, Nev., and Michael and Katharyn (Antle) of Madison, Wis. He was especially proud of his two lovely granddaughters, Tiffany Joy and Tamera Joy. He had four devoted sisters and a brother. Barbara Honea and Gretchen Hertner reside in Amarillo. He is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews living throughout the country. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be to Motor Meals, 2025 Traverwood Drive, Ann Arbor, MI 48105. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jean Louise Habig Urshan INDIANAPOLIS - Jean Louise Habig Urshan, 85, died Tuesday, May 8, 2007, in Amarillo, Texas. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Rector Funeral Home Coulter Chapel, 8310 S. Coulter St., in Amarillo, with Terry Pugh, pastor, officiating. Jean Louise Habig Urshan, 85, of Indianapolis passed away Tuesday, May 8, 2007, at 1:45 p.m. after being involved in a motor vehicle accident in December 2006. Jean was born July 21, 1921, in Indianapolis to Andrew and Hattie Gakstetter Habig, and throughout her life she loved and stayed close to both the Habig and Gakstetter sides of her family. The very gentle and backward country girl traveled to New York City with her pastor, Raymond Hoekstra, in 1938 and there met the handsome Nathaniel A. Urshan, son of a prominent New York pastor. Nathaniel and Jean were married in October 1941. The marriage of the Urshans launched a ministerial career of speaking and singing that included the pastorate of the 2500-member Calvary Tabernacle in Indianapolis from 1949 to 1979, the leadership post of the 4 million-member United Pentecostal Church International from 1977 to 2002 as well as hundreds of conferences, camp meetings and special church events around the world. The unpretentious girl who attended the Arthur Jordan School of Music in Indianapolis and the Apostolic Bible Institute in St. Paul, Minn., and played the piano at the little, backward church in Brown County, Ind., never dreamed that their music on CDs, tapes, records and in live performances would impact an entire generation of listeners and beyond. Her admirers included Oral and Evelyn Roberts, Bill and Gloria Gaither, Tom Trask, general superintendant of the Assemblies of God, and millions of others who tuned in to the Harvestime International Broadcast between 1961 and 2003. Jean has now stepped across the great divide. The family extends a special thanks to Triumph Hospital and the staff for the tender loving care they provided for Jean. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 63 years, the Rev. Nathaniel A. Urshan; a precious daughter, Sharon Sue McKellar; a sister, Elizabeth French; and a brother, William Habig.
