Mrs. Brant retired from Southwestern Public Services after 29 years. She had been a resident of Amarillo for many years. She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Bobbie Joe Wilson, in 2001; two brothers; and a sister. Mrs. Knox loved to cook and garden. She was a member of Lake Jackson Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ Latter-day Saints. She lived for more than 30 years in Austin and worked at the University of Texas. She graduated magna cum laude from the University of Texas. Ms. Burkhalter received her B.A. degree in liberal arts and her master's in education. She had been a copy editor on the Texas Quarterly for 12 years and the Papers of the Bibliographical Society of America for 10 years. Betty's life was rich and full of the joy of literature, theater and music. She loved travel and had a summer home in New Mexico. She was a devoted Democrat and lived gently on the planet. Grace and beauty were her assets. Ms. Burkhalter has numerous close friends who will miss her. There are no surviving immediate family members. Fee Dorothea L. Fee, 77, of Amarillo died Saturday, May 19, 2007. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in St. Paul United Methodist Church with the Rev. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd. Ms. Fee was born in Wheeling to Harvey Gorrell Fee and Elva Borck Fee. She received her diploma in nursing from Wheeling Hospital School of Nursing in 1950, a bachelor in nursing ed. at College of Steubenville (now Franciscan University), and a master of arts in nursing administration from the University of Pittsburgh. She did post-master's work at Wayland in Plainview. Ms. Fee began her nursing career in 1950 as a staff nurse at Wheeling Hospital, then at Ohio Valley General Hospital. She was appointed to the position of head nurse in the Communicable Disease Unit and then in 1956 she was appointed as the assistant director of nursing. In 1963, she accepted the position as director of nursing at Charleston Memorial Hospital (now CAMC) in Charleston, W.Va. In 1971, she moved to Chicago and accepted the position of assistant director of nursing service; in 1973 she accepted the position as vice president of nursing at Children's Memorial in Chicago. In 1975, she moved to Cincinnati and accepted the position of assistant administrator of nursing at Jewish Hospital. In 1982, she moved to Amarillo to accept the position as director of nursing at High Plains Baptist Hospital and then became the VP for nursing. She held this position from 1982 until 1993, when she retired. During her nursing career in West Virginia she served on the Board of Nurse Examiners from 1960 to 1971, was an active member of the West Virginia Nurses Association and held offices of treasurer and first VP. In Texas she was active in Texas Organization Nurse Executives and served on the board. She was active in District 2 Texas Nurses Association and has served on the board for a number of years. In 1960 she joined the Air Force Reserves and became a flight nurse in 1962. She later was appointed as flight nurse examiner. In 1964 she joined the Air National Guard and became the chief nurse of the squadron. When she moved to Chicago she joined the Army Reserves and served as retention officer. After moving to Texas she transferred to the 114th Medical Evacuation Unit in San Antonio and in 1987 became the chief nurse of the unit. She retired from the Army in 1989 with the rank of colonel. In 1991 she was honored by Sigma Theta Tau with the Mentor Award, in 1993 she was given the President's Award for Excellence in Nursing (SST), in 1993 she was given the Leadership Award in Oncology by the Oncology Nurses Association. In 1993 her name appeared in Who's Who in World Wide Leadership and in Who's Who in Nursing. Ms. Fee was a member of the Yellow Rose Club of Texas, Women's Network, Women's Business Club, Amarillo Leadership and St. Paul United Methodist Church. She was an active member of the Emmaus movement and Kairos (the prison ministry). She was a member of the Swinging Seniors, Big Texas Dancers and the Top of Texas Cloggers. He married Susan Witte on June 2, 1973. He was a former Kyrene 4-H leader and past chairman of Dayspring United Methodist administration board.
