Services were 2 p.m. Friday in Trenary Funeral Home in Kooskia. Burial was in Harpster Cemetery. Mr. Kurts was born Aug. 29, 1921, in Crested Butte, Colo. to Melinda Ivy Johnson and James Oren Kurts and grew up on the Western Slope of Colorado. Oren Harold was a decorated corporal having served three years in the Army during World War II where his three-year tour took him to Africa, Italy, Germany, France, and England. He had many amazing stories of those three years of which he only began speaking of frequently during the last few years of his life. He was able to make the trip to Washington D.C. the summer of 2004 to visit the WW II Monument where he spent three memorable days visiting with other surviving soldiers. Harold and Mable Eunice Robertson were married in November 1945 in Colorado. They later moved to the panhandle of Texas in 1948 to begin working for Natural Gas Pipeline where he continued until his retirement in the spring of 1984. He knew he wanted to retire to a life in the mountains and chose the area of Harpster where he found "just the right piece of property" in 1986. After a couple of years of preparing the land and traveling back and forth to Texas, he and Mable made Idaho their permanent home. She preceded him in death in May of 1993. He later married Hessie Corzine, also of Harpster, and they were very happy together and were able to do some traveling, visiting family and friends until the last year of his life. He was preceded in death by Mable, his parents, his son-in-law, Bill Raney, and one grandchild, Stephanie Kurts. Survivors include his wife; his children Zola Short and Carolyn Raney of Seattle, Wash., Esther and Larry Hickam of Amarillo, Steven Kurts of Dumas, Mary Beth and Norm Meyers of Grangeville and Jim Kurts of Bouse, Ariz.; five step-children, Sheila Clyde of El Paso, Pat Plum, Marsha Corzine, and John Corzine all of Bullhead City, Ariz. and Sue Hall of Placerville, Calif.; 18 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren with four more due this year; and one great-great-grandchild; 17 step-grandchildren and 35 step-great-grandchildren; eight siblings, Lowell and Della Kurts and Jesse and Ima Kurts of Kamiah, John and Sylvia Kurts of Payette, Blanche Bear of Hillsboro, Ohio, Grace and Fred Hopkins, Ruth Smith, and Rachel Corbit, all of Hotchkiss, Colo., and Esther and John Anderson of Klamath Falls, Ore. Oren Harold leaves a legacy of faith, wisdom, strength, and compassion to his siblings, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and countless other family members and friends who will miss his unfailing love for them. He was much respected in every aspect of his life and his passing leaves us all with many fond memories and a very large hole in our hearts. He will forever be remembered for his quick wit and keen sense of humor with always a story to tell, even in his early days in the hospital. He once remarked that "no one remembers a person six months after they are gone" however, that will not be the case with Dad. We will remember him with every thought about "a beautiful day in West Texas"; or "living in God's country" in Idaho. He will be buried on a grass covered hill overlooking the rumbling Clearwater River where the deer and turkeys that he admired every day from his living room window will run and play.
