Carter, 75, of Amarillo died Sunday, May 27, 2007. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Memory Gardens Cemetery with the Rev. Jim Shelburne of Washington Avenue Christian Church officiating. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St. Nihla Louise Carter was born in 1931 to Edgar E. McDonald and Allise B. Kendrick. She graduated from Amarillo High School in 1949 and attended the University of Colorado in Boulder. She was a secretary-field sales for RJR Tobacco Co., retiring in 1993. She married James L. Carter in 1953 in Amarillo. He passed away in 2003. She was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church. Nihla was a joy to everyone who knew her. She always had a smile on her face, and her graceful presence filled any room. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, not to mention her best friends, Rudy and Baby, her cats. She brought lots of laughter and unforgettable memories to many. Survivors include a daughter, Karen Delashaw of Amarillo; a son, Kelly Carter of Amarillo; and two granddaughters, Candace and Lindsey Brooks, both of Amarillo. Mr. Crawford was born Oct. 1, 1947, in Chickasha, Okla., to Leon and Odelee Crawford. He served in the U.S. Navy during Vietnam. They lived in Amarillo and he had worked for Amarillo National Gas as a measurement technician. He married Cynthia "Cyndy" Ann Gosnell on April 22, 2000, in Perryton. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery. Mrs. Fraumane was born Feb. 1, 1918, in Clarendon. She moved to Amarillo when she was 3 years old. She met and married Joe Fraumane on Sept. 7, 1944. They were married 49 years before his death in 1993. She was a homemaker and a member of Family Life Fellowship Church. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Joe Fraumane; and a sister, Esther Coburn. Survivors include three daughters, Toni Burris and husband John, Patty Fraumane and Susie Sizemore, all of Amarillo; two sons, Billy Hagee and wife Peggy and Rusty Hagee and wife Rama, all of Amarillo; a foster daughter, Diane Stroud and husband Charles of Amarillo; 11 grandchildren; 11 great- grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. She loved to shop at Wal-Mart and the mall and eat and play at Burger King. She loved singing and dancing any time music was played. She always loved wearing pretty clothes and makeup, even if it meant changing 10 times a day. Anahi will be dearly missed by her family who loved her very much. She lived in Amarillo for 22 years, working for C.R. Anthony. Upon retiring, she moved to Claude in 1990 and lived there until her death. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Claude. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard K. Lee; a sister, Juanita Wood; a brother, Edgar Wood; and a grandson, Todd Ballard. She was an accomplished artist and used her creative talent in decorating her home and as room mother for her school. Griggs & Sons Funeral Directors, 2615 Paramount Blvd. Mrs. Maziarz was born June 14, 1918, in Oswego, N.Y., to Frank and Anna Petro. She married John Maziarz on July 7, 1949. They resided in Scranton, Pa., until 1993 when they moved to Texas. Mrs. Maziarz was a retired seamstress who loved to go on trips to Las Vegas and Atlantic City with her children and grandchildren. Mrs. Maziarz's whole life was devoted to her family and friends. She had a spunky personality that made everyone fall in love with her once they were in her company. Through smiles, laughs, tears and joy, she always brought light to a room and left an impression on every heart she met. Mrs. Maziarz was a special lady and truly one of a kind. She was preceded in death by her husband; both parents; a brother; and two sisters. She worked as a school bus driver. Survivors include a son, Orel Kiphart Jr. of Montgomery; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Betty Jeanne Donnelly McGowan CLAUDE - Betty Jeanne Donnelly McGowan, 85, died Sunday, May 27, 2007. Services will be at 10 a.m. today in Claude Methodist Church with Rev. Dr. Roy Rutherford and the Rev. Janet Edwards officiating. Burial will be in Claude Cemetery by Schooler Armstrong Chapel. Betty Jeanne Donnelly McGowan was born in 1921 in Vinita, Okla. The fact that her father and mother were part Cherokee provided Betty with a unique understanding of the meaning of community service. During the war years, Betty met and married Jack McGowan, a "native son" of Claude, where they took up residence and raised their four children, Tom, Jim, Marjeanne and John. Betty began making significant contributions to the community. She taught Sunday school classes and served as Cub Scout Den Mother for her three sons. She was active in promoting Claude through its Chamber of Commerce and with the Business and Professional Women of Claude. In 1964, Betty was asked to help "temporarily" at the First National Bank of Claude. Twenty years later, she retired as a vice president of that bank. She was a member of the North Armstrong County Club, which was an organization of neighbors with a goal of benefitting the community. She served as president, secretary and treasurer of the Unity Study Club, which has a long history of sponsoring the Claude Public Library. Betty was a founding member of the Coronado Art Club and assisted with the displays of area artists. Her community involvement also included supporting United Methodist Church. She sang in the church choir, delivered Meals on Wheels and chauffeured others to doctors appointments. She served as president and secretary-treasurer of the American Cancer Society. Betty spearheaded a movement to employ a band director in the Claude school system and later formed the Band Booster Club which ultimately became the Parents Teachers Organization for the Claude Public Schools. Since 1990, when the Armstrong County Museum came into existence, Betty was elected treasurer on the board of directors and remained so until her death. As treasurer, Betty was involved in the growth of the museum, the renovation of the Gem Theater, the opening of the art gallery and gift shop, and the latest project, the renovation of the Charles and Mary Ellen Goodnight historic property and homestead. She had been totally dedicated to the museum since its inception. In 1997, Betty received the Distinguished Service Award that honors Texas Panhandle Women who helped shape the development of the Texas Panhandle through their contributions of talent and skill. Betty's contributions to her adopted community of Claude had been countless. She was a friend who always went the second mile and always brought with her a grace and beauty, good taste and good fun. A heartfelt thanks to BSA Hospice doctors and nurses, and other health caregivers and to the many who have expressed sincere condolences to her loved ones. Betty will be buried in the Claude Cemetery next to her beloved husband, Jack McGowan and her son, John McGowan. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Darrell Wait, pastor of First Christian Church, officiating. Burial will be in Northlawn Memorial Gardens with flag detail by American Legion Post No. 224 of Dumas. Arrangements are by Morrison Funeral Directors. Gene Sipes was born Aug. 25, 1925, in Duncan, Ariz. He served from 1944 to 1946 in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Philippines. After Japan surrendered he helped with the first election ever held in Japan. Gene returned to California to finish high school. He received a bachelor of science degree from Panhandle State in Goodwell, Okla., and a master's of education degree from West Texas State in Canyon. On July 4, 1952, he married Dorothy Blackshear in Dumas. In 1951 he was employed as a classroom teacher at the high school and then served as assistant high school principal for seven years. He then served as principal of Cactus Elementary for two years, six years as high school principal and nine years as Green Acres Elementary principal. Gene retired in 1984 from the Dumas Independent School System after serving 33 years. Gene had been a very active citizen and involved in many community projects. He served as director of the youth center before the YMCA was established and then served as a director of the YMCA. He helped organize Little League Baseball and was involved in coaching, umpiring and refereeing youth football and baseball. He served 10 years in the Texas National Guard and was promoted to captain. He served as commander of the guard unit when it was activated to guard the Shamrock McKee plant after the explosion in July 1956. Gene was very instrumental in securing the Veterans Memorial as a member of VFW Post 9022. He was responsible for selling many of the bricks that make up the cross for the memorial at McDade Park. He was made a life member of VFW Post 9022 for his dedication to completing the cross. He served as chairman of the United Way drive in 1985-86 and co-chairman in 1993-94, was a director for the Dumas Family Service Center 1973-1990, was a member of Dumas and Moore County Chamber of Commerce since 1952, was a life member of the Texas State Teachers Association and National Education Association. He was a member of the Dumas Noon Lions Club since 1961, serving as president in 1977. He recently was honored with the prestigious award of Life Membership in the Lions Club. He was a member of First Christian Church where he served in many capacities including chairman of the board, deacon, elder and Sunday school teacher. Since his retirement they have traveled extensively to all 50 states, 10 Canadian provinces, China, Hong Kong and 11 European countries. He was preceded in death by a son, Randy Sipes. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy; a son, Rodney and wife Leslie of Yukon, Okla.; two daughters, Melissa York and husband Jeff of Amarillo and Pat Bowline and husband Mike of Broken Arrow, Okla.; a sister, Norma Rowan of Concord, Calif.; seven grandchildren, Kim, Kelli, Brandy, Justin, Beau, Makenzie, Amber; and four great-grandchildren.
