Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Polk Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. Marty Hamrick and the Rev. Kevin Deckard officiating. Private burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St. Elsie Amacker was born Nov. 12, 1908, in Kentwood, La., a little sawmill town named for her paternal grandmother's family, the Kents. Her parents were Avis Miller Amacker and Robert Percy Amacker. The Amackers and the Kents were Southern Baptists while Avis Miller's family were devout Methodists. One of Mr. Miller's ancestors, Garret Miller, was converted to Methodism by the preaching of John Wesley when he came to preach in Ireland. The Millers had moved to Ireland, fleeing Germany during the persecution of Protestants there. The Miller family moved from Ireland to Canada and from there to Kentwood. The Percy Amacker family moved to San Angelo, Texas, in 1910, because of Percy's asthma. Elsie's father opened a little machine shop, and was later able to acquire the first Ford agency in town. There he was able to support his family of four children. Elsie was the third child. At an old-fashioned tent revival service, Elsie joined the Methodist church with her brothers and sister in about 1914, when she was 6 years old. Since that time, the church was the main focus of her life in addition to her family. She was gifted with a lovely soprano voice and sang in school and church choirs until she was 60 years old. Elsie started school in San Angelo and graduated from San Angelo High School in 1926. In her senior year she was the lead singer in the musical "Fairy Queen," and the lead in the senior play, "Miss Somebody Else." There she got her first kiss from the leading man. She was honored by being chosen Class President and President of the Pep Squad. In Epworth League, the forerunner of the Methodist Youth Fellowship, she marched with a group down the main street of San Angelo singing "Vote, vote, vote for Prohibition." She was a self- proclaimed "blue nose" abstainer all her life. In fall 1926, she entered college at Southern Methodist University where she majored in voice. She was a member of the Self-Governing Board of the dormitory. In her senior year she was asked to join Decima, an organization composed of 10 outstanding senior women. While in college, she sang in the choir at University Methodist Church on the SMU campus. During this time, she and a former classmate and neighbor from San Angelo, Hunter Cherry, began corresponding. The correspondence grew into a romance and Elsie and Hunter were married a month after she graduated in 1930. While raising two daughters, Dottie and Edie, Elsie was active in First Methodist Church in San Angelo. She was president of the Women's Society of Christian Service (WSCS) and received three Life Membership pins from that organization for work locally and in the district. She taught Sunday school to youths and adults and sang in the choir. Hunter studied accounting at the University of Texas and was a partner in a San Angelo CPA firm prior to the war. During World War II, Elsie was a Gray Lady in the two Air Force hospitals in San Angelo. When Hunter was stationed near Dallas, Elsie lived with her girls nearby in Grand Prairie, so that the family could be together. After the war they returned to San Angelo. Elsie was a member of the Bankers' Wives and the American Association of University Women. In 1969, Hunter retired from his CPA firm, and he and Elsie moved to Monte Vista, Colo., near the mountains where the family had vacationed for years. Elsie sang in the Sargent Community Church choir and the couple joined the Fifty-Fifty Club. In 1980, Hunter and Elsie moved to Albuquerque, N.M., where their daughter, Edie, lives and again, Elsie sang in the choir of Central Methodist Church there. Finally, in 1995, Elsie and Hunter moved to Amarillo, where their other daughter, Dottie, lives. In Amarillo, they joined Polk Street Methodist Church and were members of the Fifty-Fifty Club. Elsie served one term as president. In 2002, Hunter, her loving husband of 72 years, passed away at the age of 94. Elsie loved to read books of many types and loved her family and kinfolks. She felt she was always surrounded by people who loved her and was very blessed. She was 98 years old when she passed away on May 31, 2007, after a brief illness.
