Mrs. Smith was born May 9, 1928, in Coral Gables, Fla., to Jack and Francille King. She married A.B. Smith in 1949 in Tucumcari, N.M. Francille earned a B.S. in biology with a minor in chemistry. She was a "father's girl." She liked to mention that her father was installing "sound" for the Lowes Theatre people in the Miami area when she was born. In the late 1930s, Interstate Theatres transferred him to Amarillo to manage the five Interstate Theatres there. Housing was almost nonexistent in the years just prior to the war, and the family was living in a hotel. To avoid this unsatisfactory situation, Francille and her sister attended Incarnate Word Catholic School in San Antonio. Francille returned to Amarillo in 1942 and attended Amarillo College and later West Texas State College, where she met and later married A.B. Smith, a chemist/process engineer. Francille did biological work in histology at Robert B. Green Hospital in San Antonio while A.B. was stationed at Randolph Field, and at the Borger and Pampa hospitals while living there. While her husband was employed by Phillips Petroleum and Badger Engineers, plant start-ups took her to Japan, Mexico, South Africa and the Boston area. She also taught science in Dallas schools and was employed by Phillips Petroleum as a refinery chemist. Francille was first a beloved wife and the ultimate mother. Those qualities which endeared her to us, endeared her to the Japanese people to the extent that she was visited on three different occasions here in the United States by acquaintances and engineers from Showa Denko, K.K. In Wellington after some 40-odd prior moves, she cared for two bedridden ladies for a number of years and met many of the community in our bookkeeping and tax preparation office. We wish to express our deepest appreciation for doctors and nurses of Wellington Hospital and Northwest Texas ICU and specifically Dr. Shaeffer, Dr. Gentry, Dr. Carlile and Dr. Rainwater.
