Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors Colonial Chapel with the Rev. C.W. Parker, Odyssey Hospice chaplain, officiating. Mrs. Davis had been a resident of Pampa for 60 years. She owned and operated Davis Upholstery for 15 years and worked for Ideal Grocery for 15 years. Jones CHILDRESS - Russell V. Jones, 87, died Thursday, July 12, 2007. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Johnny Robertson officiating. Arrangements are by Johnson Funeral Home Russell V. Jones was born June 17, 1920, in Childress to Clarence and Elizabeth Russell Jones. Russell married Ava Jo Moreman on Sept. 5, 1947, in Canyon. Both received bachelor's degrees from West Texas State University in 1947. Russell started his practice as a licensed public accountant and taught part-time, at Childress County Vocational School. In November 1951, he was named manager of First Federal Savings & Loan Association of Childress and later named president. Under his management, First Federal became the largest of the four financial institutions in Childress, with assets of more than $40 million when he retired. Russell served two three-year terms as a director of the Texas Savings & Loan League and was a member of several committees of the United States Savings & Loan League. He was a World War II veteran and active in church and community affairs: chairman of Western District Boy Scouts, president of Lions Club, chairman of church finance committee, member of various church committees, chairman of New Library Finance Committee, two terms as city alderman, mayor pro tem, president of Chamber of Commerce, president of Board of City Development, member of Industrial Search Committee, director and secretary to Childress County Hospital Board and was a member of the board when the new hospital was planned and built. He was preceded in death by his wife; and a son, Earl "Rusty" Jones. Survivors include a daughter, Roxanne Jones Owens; a son, Dan Murray Jones and wife Connie; a brother, Clark Jones; six grandchildren, Jacob Owens, Zachry Owens, Cedric Owens and wife Gretchen, Brittany Owens, Tori Simons and husband Zachary and Megan Jones; a great-grandson, Kurt English Owens; a nephew, Marshall Jones; and two nieces, Dianna Jones and Carolyn Jones. Arrangements are by Robertson Funeral Directors of Clarendon. Mr. Hughes was born May 9, 1919, to Thomas Mac and Ella Messer Hughes in Hall County. Thomas married Margaret Lee Clark on Jan. 11, 1947, in Hall County. Thomas had been a lifelong resident of Lakeview before moving to Donley County in 2004. When living in Lakeview, he had spent most of his life farming. He was a Army Air Corps veteran of World War II and a member of First United Methodist Church in Lakeview. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Irene Hughes; and a brother, W.M. Hughes. She grew up and went to school in Amarillo, moving to Clovis in 1981. Survivors include two daughters, Sherie Willis of Amarillo and Dawn Craker of Brodnax, Va.; three sons, Kevin Craker of Lubbock, Texas, John Craker of Fitchburgh, Wis., and David Craker of Garden City, Idaho; a sister, Pam Henderson of Summerville, S.C.; a brother, John Shea of Corsicana, Texas; and four grandchildren. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Amarillo Monsignor Francis Anthony Smyer Monsignor Francis Anthony Smyer, 86, of Amarillo died Saturday, July 14, 2007. Solemn Vespers will be at 8 p.m. today in St. Mary's Worship Center. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday in the worship center with the Most Rev. John W. Yanta, bishop, as principal celebrant, the Most Rev. Leroy Matthiesen, bishop emeritus, and the Rev. Ken Keller as concelebrants and Monsignor Harold Waldow as concelebrant and homilist. Priests of the diocese will concelebrate. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St. Monsignor Smyer was born Feb. 22, 1921, in Amarillo to Worth Miller and Winifred DeLaney Smyer. He was the sixth son and child born of this marriage. Monsignor Smyer attended St. Mary's Academy school from 1928 to 1933; Price College from 1933 to 1939; St. Gregory's Minor Seminary in Cincinnati from 1939 to 1943; and St. Mary's Major Seminary in Cincinnati from 1943 to 1946. He was ordained a priest Oct. 7, 1946, by Bishop Laurence Fitzsimon at downtown Sacred Heart Cathedral. His first assignment was as assistant at Sacred Heart Cathedral from Oct. 29, 1946, until Sept. 1, 1951, when he was assigned for further studies in canon law to the Catholic University in Washington, D.C. In June 1953, he was appointed vice chancellor of the Diocese of Amarillo. On Sept. 1, 1954, he returned to the Catholic University in Washington, D.C., and completed studies in canon law, receiving his Doctorate in Canon Law, J.C.D. On June 1, 1956, he was appointed rector of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Amarillo. In November 1958, he was appointed chancellor of the Diocese of Amarillo. In August 1962, Monsignor Smyer was appointed pastor of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Amarillo. And in January 1970, he was appointed as pastor of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Amarillo, where he retired and became pastor emeritus in 2001, and continued to reside until 2006, when he took residency at Ware Memorial Care Center in Amarillo. The monsignor was a Diocesan Consultor, member of The Presbyteral Council, Diocesan Moderator of the DCCW, member of the Personnel Committee, the Marriage Tribunal, past Moderator of the Newman Club and the Priest Emmaus Support Group of Lubbock. He was also an Eagle Scout and a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1450. In 1960, he was made Papal Chamberlain with the title of Monsignor. He was active in Alcoholics Anonymous since 1970 and participated in Top of Texas and the Tomorrow Group. He was preceded in death by five brothers, Paul Smyer, Anthony Smyer, Worth Smyer, John Smyer and an infant brother. Survivors include nieces and nephews. Palmer Richard D. Palmer, 91, of Amarillo died Thursday, July 12, 2007. Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Monday in Llano Cemetery Mausoleum. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Park Place Towers Chapel with Dr. Jim Bankhead, pastor of First Presbyterian Church, officiating. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd. Mr. Palmer was born Oct. 6, 1915, in Louisville, Ky., to James Clarence and Lula Wilson Palmer. He attended high school in Louisville and graduated from Shaker Heights High School in Ohio in 1934. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church. He married Jean Rule on Sept. 19, 1941, in First Presbyterian Church in Amarillo. She preceded him in death in 2006. Mr. Palmer moved to Amarillo as the office manager for Burroughs in 1940, served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II and began his career with Don D. Harrington on Jan. 2, 1946. He worked in various Harrington operating companies and became the founding director for the Don and Sybil Harrington Foundation, serving in that capacity and until his retirement on Dec. 31, 1984. Mr. Palmer served as president of Kids, Inc., the Palo Duro Club, and the Panhandle Plains Historical Society. In addition, he was an avid tennis player and he coached baseball for Kids, Inc. and the YMCA for a period of two decades. Mr. Palmer was involved with Boy Scouts of America from 1951 until 2002, serving on the Executive Board from 1966 to 1998. He received the Silver Beaver Award in 1973, the highest recognition that the Golden Spread Council, Boys Scouts of America, can bestow upon a volunteer Scouter. He served on the board of the United Fund, Amarillo Humane Society, American Red Cross, Amarillo Area Foundation, Amarillo College Foundation, Retina Foundation of the Southwest, West Texas A&M Foundation, Texas Tech Health Sciences Center and Amarillo Foundation for Health & Science Inc. Survivors include two sons, Richard D. Palmer Jr. of Denver and Dr. Michael R. Palmer of Boulder, Colo.; and four grandchildren, Richard, Sally, Elin and Rebecca.
