(1832-1913) : Bishop Cemetery Pvt., Co. D, 1st Georgia Cavalry, SCA           military marker recently placed (Rains County Leader, 8 June 1999)           He fought in the Civil War 1862 - winter 1864 when he was wounded in the head during Sherman's advance through      Tennessee, according to the Texas State Archive; he had a steel plate in his head for the rest of his life.  He joined the 1st Georgia Cavalry, Co. D, in 1862.  G.W. came to Texas after the War and settled on a farm in the Smyrna community.
