Index to Applications for Texas Confederate Pensions A law dated 
May 12, 1899 provided pensions for disabled or indigent men and 
the widows of such men who served in the forces of the CSA.  In 
order to be eligible for the benefits, the applicant had to be a 
native Texan or have been a resident of the state before J
anuary 1, 1880, be 60 years or older or have a disability that was
the result of actual service in the Confederate army or navy for a 
period of at least 3 months and who had not deserted.  To be 
considered indigent, he had to be in actual want and destitute
of property and a means of subsistence.  Widows of Confederate 
servicemen were eligible if they had not remarried, were residents 
before March 1, 1880, and were married before March 1, 1866.  In 
1925 the pension act was revised to include every indigent or
disabled Confederate veterans who came to Texas before January 1, 1910
and widows who were also residents before 1910 and born before 1861. 
The applications and their supporting documentation are of great 
value to the genealogist because they usually give detailed 
information about the applicant's military, financial, family
and personal history.  A file contains the applicant's name, age, 
residence, occupation, physical condition, military unit-rank-duty 
stations-dates of service, and a list of his real and personal 
property.  A widow's application includes her name, her husband's
name, the date of their marriage, the date of her husband's death, 
and the military unit her husband served in with the dates of his 
service.
