L. D. Spears, H. W. (Wash) Gaines and W. D. Russell were Trustees and were a part of the Charter members and organizing group. The first building Committee is not known but a one room frame building with steeple and belfry was soon completed. On Sunday mornings the sound of the bell reminded residents in surrounding vicinity that it was time to go to the House of God for worship. W. A. Moore recalls going with his elder brother to ring the bell. Other denominations held their services in this building for a time, it being the only Church building, and school was held here until 1901. (2) May 9, 1903 a committee of R. M. Hardman, D. A. Baker, Hardie Jones, J. W. Dalby, W. C. Lucas, and E. L. Medford were elected as arbitrators concerning a parsonage. By the Nov 4, 1904 Quarterly Conference it is noted there is a parsonage at Avery. The parsonage was at the south end of the lot near the railroad tracks and the church itself facing west and more to the north end of the lot. ************************************************************************** Records are missing from 1896-1902, but in 1903 this is called the Douglas Mission and in the same charge are Lydia, Oak Grove, Spring Hill and Shawnee Chapel. The Quarterly Conference Minutes report there are 5 churches in the charge and 3 houses of worship. The 3 being Douglas (Avery), Spring Hill (3), and Shawnee Chapel.(4) Lydia congregation met in another church building and did not have it's own until 1911(5). All of these churches have been closed many years ago, and most of their members moved their membership to Avery. So in one sense, we are one church from the beginnings of many. About 1902 the town was renamed Avery, after the station agent and the church became known as Avery Methodist Church. Miss Mary Kelsoe who later became Mrs. Edd Swann solicited donations and was accredited for the purchase of the first piano, a pedal organ having been used previously. The original building was replaced by a larger one room building in 1913 when Rev. Clinton L. Bowen was minister.6 The Finance and Building Committee members were E. T. Bearden, H. W. Gaines, W. G. Bryan, Dr. W. M. Medford, L. D. Spears, E. C. Moore and Pickens Weaver. This building was dedicated the last Sunday of November, 1913 by the late Dr. George C. Rankin. For a number of years ours was known as a Mission Church, the pastor serving the above mentioned churches and in 1906-7 Coleman Springs and Cedar Creek are added. Henritta ( Nov.1909), Pine Springs, Oakridge (Feb.1913), Savannah Springs, and Union are also mentioned. For part of 1912 the names of churches in Quarterly Conference Minutes are changed. Avery is Mouzon Memorial, Lydia is Medford Chapel, Heneritta is called Clarks Chapel, but Shawnee Chapel and Oak Grove stay the same. After 2-3 Quarterly Conferences the names go back to original ones. On 9 February 1916 a Building Committee of W. G. Bryan, J. H. Howell, Ben Hardman, and J. T. Clark was appointed to remodel, or sell and buy new parsonage at Avery, May 12, 1917 the committee was discontinued with no action taken. December 1920 a committee was appointed consisting of B. W. Medford, W. G. Bryan, O. C. Greenwood, John Hamilton, J. L.Moore, Joe McCarver to examine parsonage, discussing possibility of a new house or make pastor comfortable. No action mentioned. Then on January 5, 1924, The QC authorized motion for building a parsonage and pastor given authority to name a Building Committee. Bro. Egger, Presiding Elder, was ask to go to Church Extension Board and ask for $250.00 donation and $300.00 loan for purpose of building a new parsonage at Avery. March 1, 1925, We have completed new parsonage which cost about $2100.00 or $2200. We owe about $700.00 on it. We are planning to do about $5000.00 work on the church. signed W. W. Carlton (pastor) In 1926 a balcony and classrooms were added, Rev. W. W. Carlton was pastor at this time. Some of our members recall groups going out and picking cotton and also making a house to house canvass, collecting hens to raise the money. The March 1918 QC reported the beginning of Epworth League. This apparently disbanded and was reported there were none in 1920, but in June of 1922 a report was given that 3 Epworth units had been organized. In the late 1930's and early 40's the Epworth League met with the First Baptist B.Y.P.U. (their name for young peoples group). We had church services and Epworth League twice a month and the Baptist did the same. Donald Croft was President of our League. Early 40's saw Zola Williams and Louise Lennon as the adult leaders and in 1950 the group became MYF (Methodist Youth Fellowship). Ovie Jackson was leader and Valerie Presley helped her. Neal and Nina Baker took leadership after that. James Michie III was youth President and it was a strong group at this time with an average of about 20 each meeting. The youth would go Christmas caroling to Senior citizens and also take them a bag of goodies. The Youth had a Christmas Banquet and went out to Trick or Treat for UNICEF. Bake sales were one good money making project. The MYF bought a piano in memory of Mr. Hugh Moore who was Sunday School Superintendent for many years. John Oce and Sonja Williams were adult leaders in the 1970's until the MYF was disbanded. September 20, 1920 was the last QC Minutes of the five (and more) churches as a charge and minutes show December 20, 1920 as the first with Williams Chapel7 and Avery Charge, considered now a half time church. The next few QCM show only Avery and Williams Chapel but by 1922 Shawnee Chapel, Lydia, and Henritta are listed again. In February 1909 a Woman's Home Missionary Society was organized and had 24 members. It did well for awhile but the QCM of December 20, 1920 reported a Women's Missionary Society had been organized and a report was given in October 1922 there were 17 members with Mrs. W. F. Davis, President and Mrs. H. H. Knight as Recording Secretary. After this time regular reports were given in QCM. September 1927 shows the Women's Missionary Society has 12 members and Mrs. Brose Medford is Treasurer. The same organization became Women's Society of Christian Service and is now United Methodist Women and is still strong though small group of 16. The parsonage was moved soon after first of 1951 to a site on US Highway 82 as the new sanctuary was to be built in that place. This land was sold to Louie Lindeman about 1968. A Saving Account had been established and a lot just north of church property was bought from Roger Swann for the new parsonage to be built. In 1950, Avery became a full time church. The beautiful Sanctuary was erected in 1953 when Rev. Bill Betts was pastor. It was dedicated 19 July, 1953 by Bishop William C. Martin. The Building Committee as follows: M. J. Hedgecock, J. E. Michie, Blewett Cotton, H. N. Eddins and Hugh Moore. (M. J. Hedgecock passed away before the building was begun.) The first building was replaced by the Educational Building, consisting of eight rooms, fellowship hall, library and kitchen. It was built in 1957 when Rev. Don Culbertson was pastor. It was dedicated December 22, 1957 by Bishop William C. Martin. The Building Committee for this consisted of James E. Michie, chairman; Hugh Moore; Sam Spears; Earl Warthan; and J. E. (Petie) Medford. The Lord's Acre program has played a good part in the betterment of the church since 1951, when Rev. O. B. Rogers promoted this project to be used for church and parsonage upkeep. Some things the Lords Acre program did are as follows: chancel rail, new bathroom fixtures, redecoration of parsonage (several times) new roof on parsonage and church, pew cushions (about 1970?), just to name a few. The QCM report several successful revivals scattered throughout the time between 1903-1930. These are one of the most important times in life of the church when a concentrated effort is made for the winning of souls to the Lord. A Special Charge Conference was held 12 December 1968 and James Michie III was appointed chairman of the building Committee with Kenneth Dawson, R. P. Williams, Mrs. Ona Medford and Mrs. Nancy Butts. The bid was let to Lane Duncan for $16,970. By the completion of the building the finishing cost was $18,346.43. On May 10, 1970 a dedication and open house of the new parsonage was held with Rev. Carroll Thompson, District Superintendent of Paris Sulphur Springs District, officiating. The Avery church was site of the District Conference in 1916, it being a two day affair. Delegates came by train and were entertained in our homes, while not at District Conference. We were host again for the District Conference in January 1954 and November 1963. What the church has meant to all our lives and what each pastor has contributed to make the church we love can't be expressed in words. They are here today and gone tomorrow but all have left something that the Church cherishes. We feel the same about many members that have been a part of the church and now deceased, God Bless Them All. When the stone sanctuary was built (1954), many gave pews, an organ and piano, and other furnishings as memorials, which are so marked by brass plates attached. In 1967 other gifts and memorials were given, hand carved front wooden doors, brass offering plates and hymnals. Many improvements were made in the 1980-1983 period, including the Memorial Garden, library, offices, choir robes, nursery, pew Bibles and Paraments. The charge consisted of Avery, Annona, Williams Chapel, Garland Chapel and Boxelder. The Parish was dissolved in September 1980. We were without a pastor for several Sundays and Mrs. Helen Nash filled the pulpit until Presley Hutchens was appointed to the charge of Avery and Williams Chapel in October 1980. An Exploratory Committee began work in 1991 to explore the interest and a possibility of renovation of the Sanctuary. In 1992 a Church Conference was held and voted to begin renovation when money was in hand or pledged. Construction was begun Sept 1992 and first service was held in newly renovated sanctuary the first Sunday in December 1992. In January 1993 a fund was set up for the stained glass windows and they were installed before Easter 1993. Dedication was held May 23, 1993 with District Superintendent Walter Zimmerman present. Building Committee for the Renovation was Donna Domkos and James Bain, Co-chair; Mark Storey, Carl Kennedy, Herbert and Mae Medford, Sonja Williams, Valerie Presley, Linda Mayben, James Michie, Frankie Phelps and Louis Nicholas. New pew cushions were made possible by the Memorial funds in 1995. Licensed to Preach from Avery Charge: J. T. Tisdale J. S. Tisdale (same as J. T.?) W. J. Russell Rufus Blackwell Joseph T. Blackwell Alex Hubbard Aristottle G. Coleman T. C. Coleman Gary B. Moreau was licensed to preach and fully ordained at QC September 1967. L.J.Aiken was also licensed to preach from this church, date not known but in early 1950's. The Avery United Methodist Church has been the Precinct 19 voting place for many, many years, Senior Citizens Group met here for meals twice weekly from sometime in early 1970's till 1993. The Avery Garden Club met in the Fellowship Hall for several years. Our church has sponsored Boy Scout Troops many times over the years. This church has been a place open to the community for various functions. It's heart open to all. An old church is ours, built long ago by hearts and hands and prayers of those who loved God much, and built this church that they might meet with him. So we today who use this church can never think of it as just four walls, as windows, aisles and pews, because for us ever round it clings The memory of the hearts and hands and prayers that built it here for God. Remembering this as week by week within this church we meet and talk with God we reverently walk and lift our thoughts on high In Praise to God Who unto us hath given this gift-- This Church.
