It seems that the two had a wood pile in common, and that Walker got up early and was engaged in chopping wood, when Maurer came out and ordered him to leave, saying that he had used up his part of the wood. Walker refused to do so and hot words passed betwen them. Maurer told him he would make him stop and turned to go into his house. He had advanced only a few steps when Walker struck him on the head with the back of the axe, from the effects of which he died on the same day about 12 o'clock. Mrs. Maurer, the wife of the deceased, was the only one who witnessed the difficulty and she heard, but did not see the blow struck. Walker is in jail. (McKinney Messenger, Feb. 19, 1874)
