Latimer D.S.R.R.C. 1846 Oct 28 The State of Texas } County of Red River } Be it remember that on this day personally before me George F. Lawton, Clerk of the County Court, and ex offio Recorder, in and for the County aforesaid, appeared George W. McCARLEY with whom I am personally acquainted, and whose name appears oto the annexed and foregoing transfer or assignment to John Williams, bearing dates the twenty eighth day of October AD one thousand eight hundred and forty six, for the unlocated balance of a land certificate amounting to four hundred and ninety five acres of land, and acknowledged the same to be his signature and his free voluntary act and deed for the consideration, use and purposes therein contained and expressed on this the twenty seventh day of January AD one thousand eight hundred and forty nine at ten o'clock AM {Seal} In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand as Clerk and affixed thereto the impress of my seal of office at Clarsville, on this the twenty seventh day of January AD one thousand eight hundred and forty nine and the Independence of the United States of America the Seventy Third Year. George F. Lawton, Clerl County Court, Red River County One which is the following endorsement to wit: Riled for Reord Jany 27th AD 1849 at 10 o'clock AM George F. Lawton In the original certificate in the first page and in the seventh line the words "two respectable" are blotted out and the word "and" is inserted; the word "Oct" in the fourteenth line is cancelled and the word "February" is placed beneath the same between the first and second lines of the Assigment the word "is" is interlined. George F. Lawton, Clerk I have tried to figure out what the edited text would look like if the notations made by the recorder, Lawton were made. I think it may have appeared as follows: Know ye to whom these shalt carry Greeting, that George W McKERLY appeared before the Board of Land Commissioners for said County and took the oath prescribed by the Constitution and Laws of said Republic and proved by the oath of Benjamin F. LINN and John WARE two respectable and witnesses his continued residence in Texas from the 1st of October 1835 untill the present time, he is therefore as single man entitled to one third of a league of land this therefore is his certificate for the same . In testimony whereof we have presnts set our hand and seals this 6th of February 1838. \ It is difficult to understand whether the correction to the date is for the October 1835 or the bottom line. The first correction was not made in the transcription so the second correction could be either February 1835 or it could have been made already in the last line. Since it is supposed to be in the fourteenth line it could the last one?
