Splawn had signed a deed of trust on 1425 acres of land to J.T. Dargon as Trustee for the Security Mortgage & Trust Company as security for a promissory note in the amount of $4,500 at 6% interest. The note was due and payable on 1 Dec 1895. Apparently, this note was not made as on 1 Nov 1896, 3 written notices were posted in public places in Red River County and a sale of the property was made at the courthouse steps on Tuesday, 1 Dec 1896. The highest bidder was the Texas Farm Land Company who bid $3,500. The land involved 4 tracts: (1) 640 acres from the Barclay M. Wall survey, 17 miles N 30 E from Clarksville; (2) 317 acres from the David Rainey survey; (3) 228 acres out of the Patsy Kitchens, G.W. Sawyer and J.
