Gaines, well known Civil War veteran and adjutant of the John C. Burks Camp, U. C. V., passed away at the Confederate home in Austin at 5:53 a.m. Wednesday, following a critical illness of several days. Mrs. Delia Jolley of Houston, his daughter, was with him when the end came. The remains were brought back to Clarksvile, arriving at noon Thursday, for burial in the Clarksville cemetery. The funeral service was planned for late in the afternoon. The body was carried from the train to the home of his other daughter, Mrs. Will Burks, to remain a few hours before burial Deceased was born January 17, 1847, in Virginia. The family came to Texas when he was young. He enlisted in Company E of the first Texas Cavalry and served through the Civil War, being discharged in May, 1865, and returning to Texas. For a number of years he was active in business circles in Clarksville. He was one of the charter members of the John C. Burks Camp, which was organized at Clarksville in the summer of 1890. His passing leaves only one original member of the camp, T. T. C. Anderson, whose home is now in Ashdown, Arkansas. The membership of this organization has been reduced to three, the others being Dr. J. C. Foster, Clarksville, and J. M. Childers, who lives near here. Survivors are the two daughters mentioned and two sons, Gilbert and Joe Gaines, also several grandchildren.
