Not a church in Winters. We all “went to church” in the old school house, just one big family - The mail was brought by ‘hack’ from Abilene to Ballinger and the P.O. in Winters was a corner of a gro., and residence of Mr. TOWNSEND, a big cotton gin of Bill MURRAY, and a few scattered homes, no streets! As you know, Charlie (papa - Kathryn’s father), had played in a band in Denton, so decided that he have one in Winters, and that was the beginning, and there were not many boys availableso he drafter me, and the only mistake Mrs. POE made, was that I kept it up after I married, for Dad (Uncle Asa) definitely was against it, but I was not married then, so I played in the band and had a bushel of fun! Papa and mama were married in Sept. 1901 (Charlie and Mattie), and Dad (Asa) and I were married in Oct. and I’ve lived right on the this same street ever since, and that’s a long time. Mrs. POE is the one who wrote “Runnels is my County”, which you read. I don’t know where she got these pictures, but the early one is correct and you will see Dr. GRANT (Uncle Willie) and Charlie. (She drew arrows on the pictures of the article). It must have been made after I married, or I’m sure I’d have been right in the middle - I suppose I should feel flattered to be featured in a newspaper article, but it seems kinda silly to me now - the boy who wore the lawn blouse was George LOLLAR! Love Aunt Attie Parentheses are mostly mine for clarification. Kathryn was the recipient of the letter, she was the youngest daughter of Charles and Mattie GRANT, and my father’s aunt. My father, Carlton Duwain PITTARD was born to Olivia GRANT and John Carlton PITTARD Dec. 3, 1931. His father divorced her around 1934, and my father was raised by Josephine GRANT and Uncle Pendarvis (known to me as Uncle Penn) in Austin. He has a medical practice in Grapevine, Texas. My brother GRANT was named in honor Charles and Mattie GRANT, which is a distant relative of U.S. GRANT).
