J. Letts to Celebrate 68th Wedding Anniversary on Sept. 7 Winters, Sept 4 --- The 68th anniversary which Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Lett will celebrate Sept 7, is the culmination of a romance begun 75 years ago when Mr. Lett, then a boy of 12, escorted Mrs. Lett, the eight year old Sarah Emma Estus to school. Seven years later when she was only 15 they were married on Mr. Lett's 19th birthday anniversary. The simple wedding took place at the home of the bride's foster mother and aunt near Rockford, Ala. Both the bride and the bridegroom had been orphaned indirectly by the Civil War, and both had been reared by relatives. Mr. Lett's father died of wounds received in a battle in Virginia and within a few months his mother also died. Mrs. Lett's father was killed in the second year of the fighting, leaving his wife and two young children, who returned to the plantation farm of the young widow's father. Both her mother and oldre sister died shortly afterwards leaving only Sarah Emma. Mr. and Mrs. Lett came to Texas in 1899 when they and their six children settled at Salado in Bell county. In 1906 they moved to Haskell county settling near in Judd, which was wild country then with wolves coming up to the houses to kill chickens in the door yards. Over a year ago they sold their home in Haskell and moved to Winters where most of their sons and daughters reside. Although Mrs. Lett is 84, she does her own housework, cooking and ironing and looking after their flocks of chickens. Mr. Lett, now 87, tends their victory garden and plays with their dog. One son, A. J. Lett Jr., is still living with his parents and two daughters, Mrs. Charles Williams and Mrs. C. W. Cain live at Winters and a third daughter Mrs. Walter Walker lives in San Angelo.
