Boatright Cemetery, Rusk Co, Texas *********************************************************** Submitted by: Allan Date: 6 Jul 2005 Copyright. All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm *********************************************************** I'm just providing some information for the Rusk County web site. If anyone up in that area is interested and wants to locate these graves they could possibly contact Sue Hickman. I've tried the email address with no luck. I live south of Beaumont and it's a little far to go for a visit. There are now known to be buried in Boatright Cem. 3 GUIN family members. You could add the information to the Cemetery listing. Allan Sue Hickman who created this post lives or did live in Arp, Smith County, TX. "We must be cousins: Alfred Guin and Minerva Freshour is my Gr-Gr- Grandparents also. I know where Minerva is buried. Hope you do too. If not, after my life time, her grave will be lost. Also I know where Alfred is buried, in in the Alto Cemetery. My Gr-Grandmother was Amanda Jane Guin Henderson, She married William (Billy) Henderson. Her daugther was Geneva Henderson who married Thomas Franklin Norman. Please e-mail me at . I live about 10 miles from where Amanda Guin Henderson is buried. and about 30 miles from where Minerva is buried. She is buried is a small cemetery, near Lake Striker between Henderson and New Summerfield." Buried in Boatright Cem.: Minerva FRESHOUR GUIN b. 2 Apr 1829, AL; d. 22 Jun 1906, New Salem, Rusk County, TX Son: Elijah GUIN b. 7 May 1856, Tuscaloosa County, AL, d. 22 Sept 1897, Henderson, Rusk, TX Elijah's daughter: Mary Elizabeth 'Betty' GUIN b. 15 Apr 1882, Rusk County; d. c 1895, Cherokee County, TX "According to Les Minear, Minerva died in the home of her son, William, in New Salem, Rusk Co., TX and was buried there in Shakerag Cemetery near the old school grounds. The name Shakerag possibly originated because residents would shake a rag when they wanted the train to stop there. Her grandson, Ansel Guin, believed that she was of the Quaker faith. Great-granddaughter Gladys (Guin) Posey said in a phone conversation on May 13, 2002 that she feels confident that Boatright is the name of the cemetery where Minerva is buried rather than Shakerag and adds that it was formally property that belonged to the family. It seemed possible that Gladys and Les might be referring to the same location, but disagreeing on the name of the cemetery. Gloria B. Mayfield, a Rusk Co., TX Genealogy Coordinator, described Boatright Cemetery as located in Gum Springs north of Hwy 79, almost to the Cherokee Co., TX line. She said it was abandoned and over-grown. There were only four visible tomb-stones when surveyed and they were for John R. Lowe, J. A. Morris, Mary Hudson Boatright, and Thomas Deering Boatright. Shakerag was not listed as one of the 176 Rusk Co., TX cemeteries, but not all been identified at that time." Janie Spencer
