HUNT CEMETERY - Rusk County, TX Submitted by Mary Frank Dunn, Route 2, Box 190, Henderson, Tx. 75652. Hunt Cemetery is located in Rusk County, Texas east of Henderson. It is off the beaten path and in sylvan surroundings. It is one of the older burying arounds that is still preserved and in use. The Hunt familv arrived in Rusk County March 10, 1851, having come from Blount County, Tennessee. The patriarch of the Hunt migration was Thomas Hunt Sr., born about 1787 and who died in Rusk County in 1858. Carved initials on ironstone rocks mark most of the older graves. "T.H." on one rock in the center of the cemeterv surely marks the grave of Thomas Hunt, Sr. Thomas Hunt, Sr., and wife, Lucy, accompanied by several married sons and daughters were in the trek to Texas. Sons, Thomas Jr. and William (Billy) Hunt remained in Rusk County. Absolom Hunt went to Nacogdoches County, and others moved further west. The cemetery was said to have been started the nxxt year after the arrival of the family, but the name of the person dying that vear has not been preserved. The wife of Thomas Hunt Jr. died Julv 28, 1856, and seems to be the oldest recorded death date. She was Mary (Finley) Hunt. An older cemetery was located on lower ground a short distance east of the Hunt Cemeterv. It is at the old Pine Springs Baptist church, which came to be called "Greasv Kitchen." The Hunt family gave one acre of land on the top of the hill because they considered the 1ower location undesirable. ROWELL, Jonathan - 1870 - 1944 ROWELL, Lillie B.
