Letter from J. M. Burroughs to Mr. E. B. Ragsdale Esq Galveston Jan 1st 1873 Mr. E. B. Ragsdaie Esq Jacksonville, Texas Dear Sir: Your favor of the 25th ultimo is at hand - many thnaks for the kind feeling expressed towards me -I beg leave to assure you that of my old time friends and associates, no one stands higher in my regard and esteem than yourself, and it is a pleasure that I appreciate highly to receive a letter from you, even if it was but to say howdy - I will avail myself of the suggestion you make "to wit" to cultivate the acquaintance of some of the citisens of Rusk - I will not take any decided action the matter untill I am better informed of publick opinion and wishes - and will then unto you - I believe the Judicial department as created by the new constitution is conceeded by its best friends to require change and amendment, and I have no doubt that several other of its provisions will have to be recast, before the people will be satisfied with it. The constitution of 1845, with but few changes was what the people wanted, and the delegates promised to give us, and the most remarkable thing is that we have had three constitutions since the one of 1845 - and the delegates that formed each promised to give us one similar to that of 1845 - and each one missed the mark very far, and the last was about the worst short of the three - Please remember me to Judge Joel - Mr. Hobbert - and their families. Yrs Truly J. M. Burroughs Contributed by Bobbie T. Thornton, 3724 Yosemite, Plano, TX 75023
