Rusk County, Texas MEXICAN WAR ROSTERS- 1846 Texas became a state in 1845. The Mexican government, refused to accept the annexation of Texas by the US & the western boundary of Texas was still in question. James K. Polk became president of the US only 4 days after the annexation of Texas & sent John Slidell of Louisiana down to Mexico to settle the disputes. At the same time General Zachary Taylor was ordered to send 1,500 troops from Louisiana to the mouth of the Nueces River in South Texas. When President Polk heard that the Mexican government had refused to recieve Slidell, Gen. Taylor was ordered to proceed to the Rio Grande, which now separates Texas from Mexico. The 1st skirmish occurred on April 24, 1846 on the north (Texas) side of the Rio Grande & on May 8-9, larger battles took place at Palo Alto & Resaca de la Palma. On May 11, President Polk, stating that Mexico had "shed American blood on American soil" and asked Congress to declare war. 2 days later war was declared. The following year, after US troops had moved toward Mexico City, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed & Mexico officially recognized Texas independence and accepted the Rio Grande River as the southern boundary of Texas.
