HENDERSON TIMES July 5, 1923 Sunday Evening's Fire A very unusual fire occurred on South St. Sun. afternoon which called out the fire dept. & usual quota of citizens. The old Goggan Carriage or hotel bus, discarded years ago, has been standing in Horace Turner's back yard a long time. A little child playing in there Sunday afternoon dropped a lighted match on some paper which quickly ignited. The little fellow jumped out & closed the door. Soon the flames were discovered the alarm given - but only the framework of the old hack was left when the fire dept. reached there. Record Catfish Ben Strong of Church Hill community has carried off the honors so far in the catch of big fish this season. Mr. Strong brought one to town Sat. morning which weighed 61 lbs... Mr. Holleman Writes from California 2411 Bowditch St., Berkley, Cal., June 25, 1923 Dr. Mr. Ramsey: Our Ford landed us safely on the "Peaceful Pacific" & now we are settled for a few weeks of real work. Our trip was grand. I wish you could have been along. The desert drive was fine. They had a cool day or 2 just as we passed through. The National Educational Assc. meets here next week. We expect to come in touch with big things then. This is some University, too. The enrollment for the summer is expected to reach 6000. The regular session ... Groner There has been some report current in East Texas to the effect that there is some possibility of Rusk College being closed. This report is entirely erroneous. Rusk is now having a good summer school, one of the best in history. It will open this fall as per schedule (Sept. 29 th). There is no thought whatsoever of school being closed... C. G. Truitt...
