A third child was barely alive. Josie Bell Mason, 10, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Mason, and Leta Mason, 5, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Mason, were dead and a four-year-old son of the latter family was in a serious condition. Having hidden in the icebox, the children were unable to raise the lid. They had been in the chest nearly an hour when discovered.
