He was born on June 9, 1950 in Borger, Texas, the son of Dan and Rebecca Dowdy. Ray lived everyday with a contagious thirst for life and sports. Throughout his years of playing football, coaching, teaching, or just being a friend, Ray inspired the un-inspirable and led the way to new opportunities for everyone around him. Ray's athletic talent allowed him to play for the 1967 4AAAA State Championship team of Reagan High School as an All State and All American. He attended Tyler Junior College and was named First Team All-American to the Tyler Junior College National Championship Team of 1968. Ray then attended the University of Texas and played for the Longhorns on the 1970 National Championship Team and was named First Team All Conference and All Southwest Conference for 1971 and 1972. During his 34 years in education he worked as a coach, teacher, athletic director and assistant principal. His places of work included Tyler Junior College, Tatum ISD, Henderson ISD, Del Valle ISD, Anderson High School in Austin ISD, West Texas A&M University, Mabank ISD and Huntsville ISD. Ray is survived by Sandra Dowdy; his daughters Kristen Dowdy and Regan Dowdy of Austin; Natalie Dowdy of Longview, Texas; his son, Justin Dowdy of Longview, Texas; his parents, Dan & Rebecca Dowdy of Bastrop, Texas and his sister Carolyn Dahse and husband Howard Dahse of Bastrop, Texas. Visitation will be in Henderson, Texas at Crawford-Crim and Bryan Funeral Home on Saturday, July 29 at 6:30. Graveside services will be at Tatum Cemetery, Tatum, Texas on Sunday, July 30 at 3:00.
