John Ike Porter, wrote, "My mother said that C. W. had enough C. S. A. money in an old trunk to wallpaper a house." John Porter's mother was my grandfather's sister. Columbus served in the Civil War with Captain Caleb J. Garrison's Co. D, 34th Texas Volunteer Cavalry; also Captain Isaac Dansby Co. G., 18th Texas Volunteer Infantry. Applied for pension 22 April 1905; disabled in service; 1864 Indigent List, dependant; 1865 Indigent List, 2 dependents. Pension # 11111 A copy of The Henderson Times dated May 19, 1910 with an article entitled "The Passing of The Old Men". Quote: "Just within the last few months the following named Rusk county citizens have passed into the great beyond: G.S. Strong, Sr., C.C. Philgreen, W.F. Richards, Columbus Phillips, J.H. Dunklin, A.K. VanSickle and James Lemmon. The article commemorates their service ending with "They were Confederates, soldiers valiant and true to the country they loved. They did not return when the war was over and sit on their dismantled porches, looking gloomily our over the sea of the destroyed South, but they went to work to rebuild it. We are reaping the results of their labors today. They are gone, they will not hear the command again to fall into line, nor to prepare for action----but when the Roll is called up yonder, they will answer, Here!"
