LUCAS/LUCUS Cemetery, San Augustine County, TX. ********************************************************* Copyright. All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ********************************************************* Surveyed Saturday, 23 September, 2006, by Bob Britnell (bbritnell@centurytel.net and sister Sandra. The metal sign that arches over the gate spells the name "Lucus". References to this cemetery indicate there are 2 Lucas cemeteries in close proximity to each other. However, we have been able to find only this one and suspect that the other cemetery is now under the waters of the lake. There are quite a few tombstones that mark graves that seem to have been moved here from another cemetery, which we have found to be common in the cemeteries near the lake. There are also a number of graves with missing or deteriorated headstones. Some of the flat stones have disappeared under a couple of inches of dirt and grass; we probed with a knife to find some of the EVANS and SMITH stones. DIRECTIONS: From Broaddus, on FM Rd. 83, go E. about 3 miles; From Pineland, go about 14 miles W. on 83 (just past the "Oak Grove Baptist Church" sign) to FM Rd. 2390: Turn South on 2390 and go about 4.5 miles to FM Rd. 2189; go left on 2189 about 1.75 miles, then take CR490 (straight across at the intersection of 2189/491/4750/490) and go perhaps 3/4 mile to the end of the road.
