San Augustine County, TX - Macedonia Cemetery ************************************************ Copyright. All rights reserve http://www.rootswecom/copyright.htm http://www.rootswecom/tx/txfiles.htm ************************************************ Surveyed Sat., Mar. 4, 2006 by Bobby E. Britnell and sister, Sandra G. Britnell. Our mother was a STRINGER her grandfather, John H. Stringer, is buried here. His father, Abner Stringer, who came by wagon train from Georgia, is almost certainly buried here, but in one of the unmarked or unidentifiable graves This is a very old cemetery located on a dirt road in the deep woods near Broaddus, TX. There was probably once a Macedonia Baptist Church next to the cemetery. There are many unmarked graves, and many with the remnants of wooden or petrified wood markers. There are also several older concrete markers with the engravings worn away and unreadable on some of these, the last name "BEARD" can be deciphered, but no first names. except possibly the one tentatively identified as "Texana" Hurricane Rita in September, 2005 uprooted a lot of trees and did some damage. The downed trees have been cut up and burned, leaving a lot of stumps and holes. Some stones may have been destroyed as a result of the storm. DIRECTIONS: From San Augustine, go south on US96 10 miles to SR103 go right west on 103 about 8.5 miles to SR147. Turn left south on 147 go about 4.5 miles to CR319 dirt road on the left there is a green "Macedonia Cemetery" highway dept. sign on the right side of the road with an arrow pointing to the left down the dirt roa The cemetery is about 2 miles down the road, on the right. Park by the covered "pavilion" an outhouse is available. >From Broaddus: go north on SR147 about half a mile look on the right for CR248-go slow or you'll miss it it's a small dirt roa Go about 1 mile to the junction with CR355 turn right on CR355 and follow it around a sharp left curve. The cemetery is less than a mile down the road on the left. Since our first visit about 3 years ago, many of the markers have deteriorated considerably, and will become unreadable in the near future. Hopefully, this transcription will help preserve the information. We have included amplifying information on individuals contained in our genealogical files.
