MT ZION CEMETERY, San Augustine  County, Texas, was surveyed and photographed May 19, 2009
by Bob Britnell(misterbob@suddenlink.net).  All headstones and legible markers were photographed,
and pictures will be provided to anyone who asks.  This is an African American cemetery, located 
adjacent to the Mt. Zion Baptist Church.
     There are many unmarked graves, and many unreadable markers.  Several graves along the back 
edge of the cemetery are in danger of being overrun by the encroaching shrubbery.
     DIRECTIONS:  In San Augustine,  from the intersection of SR147 (S. Clark St.) and FM353 
(Patroon St.), go east on 353one mile.  The Church is on the right and the cemetery is down the 
hill next to it.
     I made every effort to decipher the engravings on the deteriorated markers, but was not always 
successful. In two instances, trees had grown directly against the engraved side of the marker; 
without a saw, I was unable to read the markings.  I had to dig down into the ground several times 
to get to the writing.  Overall, just a typical older East Texas Cemetery!
     To aid in locating graves, the abbreviation "fhm" indicates a small metal funeral home marker.
