I have thought I would write to you for some time but have neglected until now. This is Sunday and I am staying at home, as I am not feeling very well. I am by myself, my children are scattered one in Oklahoma at my sisters, one in the army at San Antonio and the other two at Austin in the deaf and dumb school So you see I am living a very lonely life. My wife has been dead six years [Dec 25, 1913] last Xmas day. My baby was six years old the 18th of last December. My baby and a boy 12 years is in the def school, the little boy in Okla is nine and the boy in training camp is nearly twenty two. I shall try to give you some history of my father's family and maybe you know some of them. My father's name was Thomas and my Mother name was Samaria Hobson and a daughter of Col James J. Hobson. My grandfather name James Grimes and I can't call to memory all his brothers but will give you a few. Henry, Nathan, and Louis. Uncle Louis was a Methodist preacher. My fathers brothers were John and Luther, these are the only ones I ever saw. His sisters were Elizabeth, Tennie, Sack, Jane and Emma. I was born in Murray County Tenn in the year of 1871. My folks moved from Murray to Tipton Co Tenn when I was just a few months old and we came to Texas in 1878. I remember a few Grimes in West Tenn old Aunt Argie Grimes that used to smoke the long stem pipe when she came to see us. She was a very old lady, then Cousin Kay Grimes and cousin George the one legged man.[Note: this George was mentioned as a school teacher in Sam Grimes account] I remember well that used to play with us little tots. Cowboy Jim I will mention his name as he made a preacher of himself and went to Old Mexico as a missionary. My father has been dead thirty five years this month. Mother died [March 1884]. Mother died in the year of 1899. If we are any kin and you know my people I sure would like for you to give me the history. If you ever come to see Frank I sure want to meet you. Please answer my letter.
