Ketchum San Saba County Post Office San Saba Texas Filed July 10, 1909 Approved Aug 31, 1909 Quarterly Allowance, $24.00 Pension allowed from ___________________________ Rejected Increase -------------------------------------- Form C Soldier's Application for Pension For use of blind, maimed and totally disabled soldiers who are in indigent circumstances ----------------------------------------------------------- THE STATE OF TEXAS, County of San Saba I, Nicholas Ketchum, do hereby make application to the Commissioner of Pensions for a pensions to be granted me under the Act passed by the 31st Legislature of the State of Texas, and approved March 26, A.D. 1909, on the following grounds: I enlisted and served in the military service of the Confederate States during the war between the States of the United States, and that I did not desert the Confederate service, but during said war I was loyal and true to my duty, and never at any time voluntarily abandoned my post of duty in the said service; that I was honorably discharged or surrendered A.D. 1863, the 6th Ark Regiment, was reorganized and I was not reappointed surgeon and exempted by surgeon certificate That I have been a bona fide citizen of this State since prior to January 1, 1880, and have been continuously since a citizen of the State of Texas, and that I am unable to perform (Here state fully the disability under which the applicant claims a pension, whether he lost in service a limb or limbs, eyes, or cause of total blindness, or whether he is totally disabled by reason of wounds received in service or disease.) manual labor, the vital organs failing to perform their functions a consequence of Disease and Infirmities incident to age I do further state that I do not hold any national, State, city or county office which pays me in salary or fees one hundred and fifty dollars per annum, nor have I an income from any other employment or other source whatever which amounts to $150.00 per annum, not do I receive from any source whatever money or other means of support amounting in value to the sum of $150.00 per annum, nor do I own in my own right, nor does any one hold in trust for my benefit or use, nor does my wife own, nor does any one hold in trust for my wife, estate or property, either real, personal or mixed, either in fee or for life, of the assessed value of over $1,000.00; nor do I receive any aid or pension from any other State, or from the United States, or from any other source, and that I am not an inmate of the Confederate Home, and I do further state that the answers given to the following questions are true: 1. We are resident citizens of the County of Dallas in the state of Ark and our Post Office is Princeton. We know Dr. Nicholas Ketchum. He formerly resided here and went out to the Civil War as a confederate soldier in a company from this place. He was appointed Surgeon of the 6th Ark Regt of Infantry. He enlisted in 1862 and served until the ----of the Civil war and never deserted. We have been informed that he resides now in San Saba Co. Texas and needs help and desires a pension from Texas as a confederate veteran which he is entitled to, if he can prove by 2 or 3 witnesses that he did serve as a soldier in the Confederate Army and we gladly send our affidavit to that effect. He was Nicholas Ketchum, a field surgeon. He received a pension for many years while living at San Saba Texas. Do you have on file any information that would let me know what company or division he served in or what battles he participated in? If you do not have such information on file, do you know where I could get it? The records of this office show one Nicholas Ketchum of San Saba, Texas filed application for Confederate Pension in July 1909 and the application was approved under Pension File No. 17156. Nicholas Ketchum stated he was a member of the 6th Arkansas Regiment of Infantry, Confederate States Army and that in 1863 the company was reorganized and he was not reappointed surgeon but was exempted by Surgeons certificate. The application for pension of Mr. Ketchum was approved on the following report furnished this office by the Adjutant General, War Department, Washington, D.C. "It is shown by the records that Nicholas Ketchum, sergeant, 6th Arkansas Infantry, Confederate States Army, was enlisted July 26, 1861. The records of this office show one Nicholas Ketchum of San Saba, Texas filed application for Confederate Pension in the State of Texas on July 10, 1909. The application was approved under Pension File No. 17156. The application shows that he was 80 years of age on October 27, 1909, born in Columbia, Tennessee. The exact year of his birth is not given. He stated he had resided in Texas 36 years. His occupation was a physician. Date of his death not shown. Nicholas Ketchum stated he was a member of the 6th Arkansas Regiment of Infantry, Confederate States Army and that in 1863 the company was reorganized and he was not reappointed surgeon but was exempted by Surgeons certificate.
