Snellings do hereby make application for a pension, pursuant to the provisions of the First Section of title 109, Revised Civil Statutes, 1925, providing for Confederate Pension, amended by Chapter 95, General Laws of the Fortieth Legislature, as was amended by Senate bill 287, Acts of the Regular Session of the Forty-first Legislature of the State of Texas, approved March 5, 1929, on the following ground: I am a widow of J. L. Snellings deceased, who departed this life on the 16th day of June, A.D. 1916, in the County of Scurry in the State of Texas.* My husband, the said J. L. Snellings, enlisted and served in the military service of the Confederate States during the war between the States of the United States and he did not desert the Confederate service. I have been a resident of the State of Texas since prior to January 1, A.D. 1910, and have been continuously since a citizen of the State of Texas. I do further state that I do not receive from any source whatever money or other means of support amounting in value above the sum of $300.00 per annum, nor do I own in my own right, nor does anyone hold in trust for my benefit or use, estate or property, either real, personal or mixed, either in fee or for life, of the value of one thousand dollars, exclusive of the home of the value of not over $2000; nor do I receive any aid or pension from any other State of the United States, and I do further state that the answers given to the following questions are true: 1. What is your age, and date of birth: 78 - Oct., 12th, 1851 2. Whre were you born? Blunt County, Tennessee 3. How long have you resided in the State of Texas? 70 Years 4. How long have you resided in the county of your present residence: 3 years 5. What is your post office address: San Marcos, Texas 6. Have you applied for a pension under the Confederate pension law and been rejected: No. 7. Did your husband draw a pension? no 8. Give, if possible, the postoffice adddress of your deceased husband at the time of his enlistment. 9. What was your husband's full name? Jasper Lafaette Snellings 10. In what State was your husband's command originally organized? Georgia 11. How long did your husband serve? 2 years If known to you, give date of enlistment and discharge. Enlisted May 28th 1863; wounded and at home when war closed. 12. What was the name or letter of the company, or number of the regiment in which your husband served? If he was transferred from one branch of service to another, give time of transfer, description of command and time of service. Snellings , applicant for a pension as the widow of J. L. Snellings deceased, is in truth and fact the widow of J. L. Snelling of lawful age being first duly sworn deposes and says: that Jaspe Lafyett Snellings was my younest Brother and was very badly wounded in the confederate War near Atlanta Georgia in the year of 1864. Affiant further saith that he was instumental getting his brother above mentioned out of the hospital near Atlanta Georgia in the year of 1864, and he was badly wounded in the head and never gotten over it entirely. Affiant further saith that there was five brothers of the Snelling family, and they was all in the Confederate Army. Further Affiant Saith Not. (signed) E. A. Respectfully returned to: Them Comptroller, State of Texas, Austin, Texas. The records show that J. L. Snellings, private, Capt. Howard's Company, Georgia Infantry (Non-conscripts), Confederate States Army, enlisted May 28, 1863, at Columbus, for the period of the War. His name appears on the Company Muster Roll of the organization named above dated June 11, 1863, only roll on file, presence or absence not stated. This compnay was authorized by Sec'y of War to be raised by Capt. Howard for guard duty in the city of Columbus, Georgia. The majority of the privates are near the age of 18. Snellings, a Confederate pensioner (#46357), which occured Sunday Afternoon, June 1, 1947. I desire instruction concerning how to secure the mortuary aid provided, to be used in partial payment of the funeral expenses which I have assumed with the Rogers-Pennington Funeral Home of San Marcos, Texas. I am writing, further, to enquire how I may secure authorization to cash the monthly pension check which the postman left on Monday, June 2. The funds provided are greatly needed in partial payment for the heavy expenses of her care during the last months of her life. Pending your reply, I am holding the pension envelope, unopened. Snellings - 825 Elm Street - San Marcos, Texas - Dear Sir: I acknowledge receipt of your letter of June 4 in which you notified this office of the death of your Mother, Mrs. J. L. Snellings, a Confederate Pensioner. Since Mrs. Snelling's death occured during the month of June, her estate will be entitled to the monthly warrant for $50.00 issued for May 31, 1947. The warrant should be endorsed with the name of the pensioner, showing she is deceased and giving the date of her death, and showing the person endorsing the warrant has the right to do so. Place the warrant in your local bank for collection and when it is presented to the State Treasurer, I am of the opinion it will be paid. Enclosed is a blank form for making application for the Mortuary Warrant. Please have the same properly executed and have the Undertaker attach to it a sworn itemized statement showing the cost of the funeral. If the application is properly executed and approved by this office a Mortuary Warrant in an amount not to exceed $100.00 will issue to the person executing the claim. Yours very truly, Geo. H. Snellings do hereby certifiy that I am the person to whom is entrustred the paying of the accounts and indebtedness of the late Mrs. J. L. Snellings, who was a pensioner of the State of Texas, and whose file number was 46357 and whose original county was Hays Texas. The pensioner died in the home of D. A. Snellings who was related to the pensioner as son. That the warrant, which application is hereby made for, shall be applied to paying all or part of the funeral expenses incurred by the said pensioner Mrs. J. L. Snellings. I further certify that the warrant for the current month has not been cashed by the pensioiner, to the best of my knowledge and belief.
