Pace and Tom Rogers attempted to tear up the plates and enlarge the sewer pipe hole in the county jail. In the spring of 1877, George J. Shields built a hotel on the east side of the square and ran it until October 1881 when he sold it. It is now the Poole House, owned and controlled by Mrs. E.C. Poole. It is a neat two story house with 14 rooms. Owing to poor health, Mrs. Pool has closed it as a hotel and rents furnished rooms to regular lodgers. Carl Bialluch came to Albany in Nov 1881 as a contractor and builder. He erected the Methodist church, the residence of Thomas Maloney, and the Texas Central Saloon. Ed. Russell came here in the fall of 1879. He is a pusher. Mrs. L.V. Moore opened up a Millinery shop in the Bigg Building last April. The Jones House, formerly the Herron House, located west of Conrad * Co., store, a frame building, two stories high and owned by Misses Jones, sisters of John Jones, so well known among the cow men of this part of the state. Elliott & Wood opened a Family Grocery on North Main streeti n December 1881. Next door south is the Parlor Saloon, owned by Elliott and McMurray. Lige Earl, Ft. Griffin’s old barber, has been carrying on his trade in Albany on North Main street. A.B. Duty, contractor and builder. W.E. Wigley and Son came here in May from Mineola bought the stocks of Rev. Trimble and MR. McMurray. They also carry a line of coffins and burial caskets. James Goff is building a two story hotel of 14 rooms in Throckmorton, Jim Wetherbee is the contractor. Wednesday night 3-1/2 miles of wire was cut on Major S.O. Bull’s place near the east line of the county, each wire being cut apparently with a hatchet on every post. Major Post came here a few weeks ago, bought 5,000 acres of land, built a comfortable house, enclosed the tract with a wire fence, bought 100 head of horses.
