Charles Haughn, ex-county judge of Marion county was assassinated Monday while returning to his home in the country from the county seat. March 1878, George Clive located in Albany and opened a Drug Store in a little room on the north side of the square. Mr. Clive sold his stock of drugs, paints, etc. to C.H. Hope. In the spring of 1881, county Judge J.L. Fisher and county surveyor, H.C. Jacobs, formed a co-partnership of Jacobs & Fisher, for the transfer of real estate. M.T. Jones and T.M. Richardson opened a lumber yard here 1-1/2 years ago. 1 Feb,. 1883 – Jim Melton, ex-sheriff of young County bought the Buck House, near the depot, cleaned, refitted and refurnished and changed it a new name. The Albany House, under Mr. Melton’s management, is first-class in all its parts. He has just completed an addition which now contains 21 rooms. Four years ago John Lackey came here and opened a blacksmith shop. It is now known as Lackey & Reed. McAmis & Wilson came to Albany in the winter of 1881-1882 as painters and paper hangers. J.G. Tackitt bought the livery stable and wagon yard last November opposite of what then known as the Herron House. Hugh Corrigan, the Harness and Saddle man located on north main street in charge of Mr. Lindsey. Corrigan moved here in the fall of 1881. The office Saloon is located on the west side of the square, in a building 20x70 feet. Contains one billiard and one pool table.
