Truitt and his wife were sitting in their room talking. Mr. Truitt had his back close to an open door. The murderer placed the muzzle of his pistol close to the head of his victim, who turned, and at the same moment the ball entered his head just above the eye, coming out at the back of his head. Truitt died five minutes after being shot. Just before dark a man rode up and paid a negro boy 15 cents to show him where Truitt lived. Tying his horse a short distance away he noiselessly crept up, fired the fatal shot, mounted his horse, and fled, hotly pursued by a cousin of the murdered man.
