A. Battey & Company, 1889, Vol I, p 861, 862. BERRYMAN L. WALKER was born in Oglethorpe county, Georgia, August 14, 1829, a son of William S. and grandson of Mason D. Walker. His grand- father was a member of one of the first families of the Old Dominion, and when a young man moved to Union District, South Carolina, where William S. Walker was born in 1797. William S. Walker was reared in South Carolina, and January 5, 1823, married Annie W. Holder, who was born in France, February 26, 1792, and a daughter of Daniel Holder. A few years after their marriage, they moved to Oglethorpe county, Georgia, and thence, in 1830, to Meriwether county, the same State. From there, they moved to Alabama, in 1836, living first in Tallagdega county, and in 1838 moved to Randolph county, where they lived about eight years. In 1846 they moved to Texas and settled in Smith county, where they spent the rest of their lives. The father died February 21, 1880, and the mother, May 23, 1883. They were members of the Missionary Baptist church, of which he was a deacon many years. They had a family of five children--Mason D., William D., Georgia A., Berryman L., and James F. B. L. Walker was seventeen years old when his parents moved to Texas, and here he began the battle of life on his own account. He has devoted his attention to agriculture, and now has 334 acres of valuable land, 100 acres being under cultivation. July 19, 1859, Mr. Walker married Mary Murray, a native of South Carolina, born May 25, 1839, daughter of Titus Murray, and to them were born ten children--William L., Ida B., James F.,Titus M., Montie T., Stephen W., Pinckney H., Joseph V., Sidney D., and one that died in infancy. Mrs. Walker died March 15, 1887. She was a member of the Missionary Baptist church and was a devoted christian woman. Mr. Walker is a member of the same church, and is also a Master Mason. May 20, 1862, he enlisted in the Confederate army, in Company I, Twenty-second Texas infantry, commanded by Colonel Hubbard, and participated in many important battles, among which were those at Mansfield, Pleasant Hill and Jenkins' Ferry, serving until the final surrender in 1865. He was a brave and gallant soldier for the cause he believed to be right.
